2013 Domaine Cabirau "Serge & Nicolas" Maury Sec

SKU #1218800 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2013 Maury Sec Serge & Nicolas has shed its baby fat and offers a medium to full-bodied, elegant, seamless profile. Loaded with notions of blackberries, plums, violets and pepper, drink it over the coming 3-5 years. (JD) Inner quote mark (4/2017)

Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark A blend of 60 percent Grenache with 28 percent Syrah and 12 percent Carignan, this is lush and velvety. The combination of melted chocolate and sweet cherry flavors brings to mind a Black Forest chocolate cake, while the spicy tannins keep it just this side of savory. For turkey mole. Inner quote mark (6/2015)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark A fresh, savory undertone marks the red berry, dried herb and grilled plum flavors in this fleshy, full-bodied red. Crisp acidity drives the finish of green olive, spice and hot stone. (GS, Web-2015) Inner quote mark

I took a poll of my friends: Pick one or two words to describe DAN. The most common answers? OVERT! BIG! BOISTEROUS! The same can absolutely be said for this offering from our beloved Domaine Cabirau. A very complex bottling this boasts a calvacade of both black and red fruit, fine tannins, and a long lasting finish! Fantastic!

The Maury Sec is such a triumph with its deep rich fruit and full body. All from the black slate soils of Maury, this reminds me of a top-notch Priorat from Spain. Like Priorato, this is Catalon country and the influence of the Pyranees is ever present. Many of the wines of this region can be a bit over the top with concentration and though this Maury has that, it has subtlety and grace. A silkscreen of youthful tannins lightly conceal what is lying in wait though. Rich black and blue fruit, roasted plums, fig confiture and bittersweet chocolate are just a few of the flavors. There is so much potential for longevity here. Either a few hours open now or a few years down but this could rank with some of the greats of the region - Bila Haut, Clos des Fees and Gauby. Oh yeah, it's also a fraction of the price.
