2010 Uccelliera Brunello di Montalcino

SKU #1216376 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Andrea Cortonesi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino struts its stuff from the very start. This is a Brunello of profound beauty, intensity and complexity. At this young stage in the wine's life you get a generous dose of primary fruit focused on cherry and blackberry. You also get so-called secondary aromas from the oak that recall spice, cinnamon and dark smoke. These lead to the promise of beautiful tertiary aromas as the wine continues its slow evolution over the course of time. This wine is like a long-distance runner who explodes from the starting line and keeps a steady pace throughout the race. Dark penetration and rich aromas wrap generously over the palate. Endnotes of spice, cured meat and barbecue smoke add extra layers to the finish. I am a huge fan of Uccelliera's Brunello and the 2010 is absolutely unforgettable. (ML) Inner quote mark (2/2015)

94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A red with lots of dried berry, dried tomato and mineral character on the nose. Full body very chewy and structured. A dense and chewy wine that needs time to soften. Big and powerful. Better in 2017. Inner quote mark (1/2015)

94 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark This is packed with sweet cherry, plum and mulberry fruit, accented by licorice, leather and spice notes. Shows grip and character, with a mouthwatering finish. Best from 2018 through 2033. (BS) Inner quote mark (6/2015)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Smoke, tobacco, cedar and roasted coffee beans wrap around a core of juicy dark cherries and plums in the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino. There is plenty of depth in the glass, but, as is often the case here, three years in oak yields a wine with slightly oxidative overtones. Powerful, incisive tannins support the finish. 92 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Opening with aromas of flowers and spearmint, Uccelliera’s 2010 shows a darker side in its flavors, with black and red fruit and a sanguine note of rare steak. Notes of licorice and sweet char come up before a ferrous wall of tannins descends on the finish, calling for several years of cellaring to soften. Inner quote mark (12/2015)

91 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Pungent mix of floral and smoky scents; tobacco and spice notes add to fleshy ripe fruit. Well balanced and complex with mouth-puckering tannins and a hint of game; this has a real savoury quality and huge potential. (Panel Tasting) Inner quote mark

91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Hearty and soulful, this offers aromas of tilled soil, leather, game and woodland berry. The meaty palate is still very tightly wound, delivering black cherry, plum, grilled sage, licorice and tobacco alongside bold tannins. Hold until 2018 then enjoy. (KO) Inner quote mark (5/2015)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Dense, inky red colour; one of the darkest here. Rich but open on the nose, with plush liqueur-soaked cherry aromas, and heady with alcohol. While far from the most elegant wine here, this is highly successful on its own terms: the high alcohol is woven into the fabric throughout rather than appearing only as an unwelcome surprise on the finish. The fruit remains vibrant, and the tannins are supportive, not oppressive. An arguably exaggerated style, likely to be controversial, but I absolutely cannot fault the execution. 17.5/20 points. The nose of this wine is full of spicy cherry highlighted by complex soil components, on the palate the wine is full of sweetish wild cherry like flavors that actually come across eventually as savory rather than sweet, as the earth and spice begin to dominate. Then more dark fruit begins to emerge while a bit of tannic structure, but they are super fine grain tannins. Then the wine shows a Long, long balanced finish, with more spice and savory flavors. Outstanding wine.
Drink from 2016 to 2030
