2011 Domaine Armand Rousseau Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

SKU #1214798 92 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark The Charmes, Mazis and Clos de la Roche were all raised in one wine barrels in this vintage, as has been the case for several years chez Rousseau, and I love how the wood plays a beautiful supporting role to the terroir in each wine. All three of these crus seem to be getting better with each passing vintage these days, as I find more intensity here than was routinely the case a decade ago, without any of the cuvées losing any of the elegance that has defined them for a generation. 2011 Rousseau Charmes-Chambertin is another absolutely lovely wine in the making, wafting from the glass in a refined mélange of red and black cherries, plums, raw cocoa, a complex base of soil, a hint of vanillin oak and a pungent topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, pure and very sappy at the core, with a fine sense of reserve, ripe and beautifully integrated tannins and outstanding length and grip on the elegant and intensely flavored finish. This is a superb Charmes! (Drink between 2020-2050) Inner quote mark (12/2012)

89-92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark In contrast to the reduction present in the prior wines this is really quite aromatically lovely with its expressive nose of very fresh red berry fruit, earth and humus scents. There are the same kinds of very fine-grained tannins underpinning the opulent yet reasonably precise medium weight flavors that culminate in a balanced and persistent if slightly less complex finish. 89-92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Good full medium red. Expressive nose melds redcurrant, mocha, rust, minerals and flowers, plus a suggestion of game birds. Sweet, smoky and nicely concentrated, with a musky quality to the complex flavors of redcurrant, smoky minerality, mocha and game. Finishes with supple tannins and excellent length. Very Gevrey. 91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Red stone fruits, plums, menthol, rose petals and spices take shape nicely in the 2011 Charmes-Chambertin. In 2011, the Charmes-Chambertin is a bit savory and herbal, but it otherswise shows lovely balance and terrific overall depth in a pliant, mid-weight style ... (AG) Inner quote mark (3/2014)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Rousseau’s Charmes-Chambertin 2011 has an earthy bouquet, just a little stemmy but nicely defined with brambly red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins and plenty of tertiary fruit, foursquare and a little austere on the saline, angular finish that does improve in the glass. This just needs to find its groove, but there is potential, especially because it performed so exquisitely a few months back. (NM) Inner quote mark (11/2014)
