2009 Cune "Imperial" Reserva Rioja

SKU #1214023 93 points Vinous

(85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano and 5% Mazuelo): Vivid ruby. A complex, expansive bouquet evokes ripe cherry and blackberry complicated by suggestions of pipe tobacco, vanilla, leather and potpourri. Sappy, penetrating and smoky on the palate, offering sweet cherry-cola and dark berry compote flavors that become zestier and spicier with air. Dusty tannins build on the strikingly long, expansive finish, which shows excellent clarity, repeating spiciness and lingering dark fruit character. For a world-class, ageworthy red wine this is a remarkable value. (JR) (9/2014)

93 points Wine & Spirits

The 2009 vintage turned this wine’s typically austere Rioja Alta style toward sumptuous richness. It has the fatness of a black mushroom and dark fruit ripeness, while the texture is sleek, with clean, modern lines. A selection from Cune’s top estate vineyards, this will age well over the next five years or more. (12/2014)

Wine Spectator

This supple red shows lively berry, vanilla and spice flavors, supported by light tannins and citrusy acidity. Fresh and harmonious. (9/2014)

K&L Notes

Cune is one of the legendary 19th century founded Rioja bodegas. Their Imperial bottlings are seriously structured and traditional; these are wines built to age. 2009 was a fantastic vintage in Rioja, a vintage with a nearly perfect balance of fruit ripeness, flavor intensity, and more than sufficient acidity to lend freshness and serious ageability. To be sure, the 2009 Imperial should continue to improve for quite a while.
