2010 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino

SKU #1213434 96 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Aromas of burnt orange peel and cherry with hints of dried bark and mahogany. Full-bodied and very tight and dense, with a beautiful fruit, tannin and acid balance. Finesse and strength. Best wine from here for ages. Needs until 2018 to show its true quality. Inner quote mark (12/2014)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Fattoria dei Barbi's 2010 Brunello di Montalcino starts with a tightly wound personality that begins to unravel slowly, one delicate layer at a time. As it does, you become aware of dried fruit, cigar box, crushed mineral, plum, tar and cola. The wine puts on a beautiful display. I also loved the mouthfeel of this beautiful wine: It is tonic, tight and brimming with energy. Well-integrated oak notes give the wine a spot of softness and velvety spice. This is one beautiful Sangiovese. Stefano Cinelli Colombini has released a fine set of new wines and his base Brunello truly shines in the 2010 vintage. The wines are well priced and immediately attractive. (ML) Inner quote mark (2/2015)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark A deep, powerful wine, the 2010 Brunello di Montalcino possesses notable depth and intensity. Dark cherry, plum, smoke, tobacco, new leather and incense meld together in a muscular, resonant wine built on structure. This is a 2010 that is going to need time to fully come together, but it is impressive just the same. (AG) 93+ Inner quote mark (2/2015)

92 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Broad and savory, with licorice, leather and tobacco flavors. Mulled cherry notes lurk in the background, while beefy tannins come to the fore on the lingering finish. Best from 2019 through 2033. (BS) Inner quote mark (6/2015)

91 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Very elegant expression of Sangiovese, tar, liquorice, underbrush and ripe red fruits. Big rich and ripe chocolaty palate with black and dried fruit flavours. Beautifully balanced and complex on the finish. (Panel Tasting) Inner quote mark

91 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark This is powerfully structured, its tannins gripping the brambly fruit flavors, the wine tinged with herbal notes of thyme and celery. A bright note of ruby grapefruit adds lift to the fruit flavors, and the fresh acidity suggests this will be more expressive after a few years in the cellar. Inner quote mark (12/2015)

Fattoria Dei Barbi is one of Montalcino's oldest producers of Brunello, and their contribution to the legendary 2010 vintage is one of my favorites! The combination of small and large oak used to age the wine lends a unique and delicious herbal/garrigue quality to the ripe raspberry and plum fruit flavors that coat the palate. The solid tannin structure ensures this will age into an interesting and beautiful wine.

New York Times wine critic declared the 2010 Fattoria dei Barbi Brunello di Montalcino his "best value" at $45. Due to Italian wine buyer Greg St. Clair's heroic efforts over the years in developing our direct import program, we are able to offer a lot of great wines at similar prices. That being said, this is a lovely wine in an outstanding vintage, and well worth your consideration. Classic appeal. Sangiovese at its best. Add a few bottles to your cellar list in this "don't miss" vintage.

One of the best red wines I have tried all year! Barbi’s “Blue Label” Brunello is the heart of the estate’s production and its flagship bottling. Does not hurt it is a 2010, one of the best vintages in years. 24 months in small-medium size oak barrels for a few months, then the remainder in larger oak barrels; 4 months further refining in bottles. Dark fruit and spice box on the nose. Great earth tones, tannins and a backbone of acidity shows off the amazing structure of the vintage. Approachable now, but do yourself a favor: get a case and put it away for 10 years. Any grilled meats will do this bottle proud.

With the growing trend of modern-style wine in places like Brunello, I have difficulty finding wines that have all that old school earth while still maintaining fruit--it seems producers pick on one side or the other (earth or fruit). But the Fattoria dei Barbi has taken a clean Old World approach while maintaining balance and fruit. Aromas of sandalwood, leather and tar lead to a palate with a core of cherry and a hint of plum surrounded by tobacco, anise and cured meats. The tannins are well integrated and balanced with great acidity making this wine approachable to drink now but will certainly reward those who wait!

Greg St. Clair, our esteemed Italian guru, has brought in an extravagant array of the highly-coveted 2010 Brunellos, and our staff tastings have been filled with more memorable oohs and aahs than you can count. The ostentatious Barbi Brunello showcased impressively savory notes of ripe, black cherries, plums, tabak, spice and tar, picking up earthy minerals and leather on the strong finish. This wine was almost criminally good! A strong cellar candidate, it will develop even greater complexity and velvet over the next several years.

Classic Barbi, black cherry & ripe strawberry, very well balanced. This is full-bodied and powerful, soft tannins long finish, slightly rustic, but impressive for its concentration.

I absolutely love this wine, the best thing they've done... that I can remember. The nose is full of earth, spice, leather, dried wild cherries and is a powerful statement from the nose. On the palate a classic, long, slightly leathery character is in the middle of a broad, rich and luxurious follow through. Layers of spice, plum, wild cherry, wild herbs in a long procession of flavors marching to the finish. In the finish a long, persistent and so satisfying end, Super wine.
Drink from 2015 to 2035
