2013 Chateau Puech-Haut "La Closerie du Pic" Coteaux du Languedoc Pic Saint Loup

SKU #1209333 93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Still not in bottle (it will be in bottle by the time you read this), the 2013 Coteaux du Languedoc la Closerie du Pic is an incredible looking barrel sample that's made from equal parts Syrah and Grenache, with the Syrah aged in barrel (some new) and the Grenache in concrete tank. It exhibits terrific amounts of cassis and black raspberry fruit to go with additional notes of pepper, smoked meats, violets and crushed rock. Full-bodied, beautifully pure, layered and elegant, yet rich and textured, it should drink nicely on release, yet also evolve gracefully. Owned by Gerard Bru, Chateau Puech-Haut lies just outside the village of Saint Drezery, located to the northeast of Montpellier. The estate covers over 100 hectare and they receive consulting advise from Philippe Cambie. While they opted to not produce their limited production cuvees in 2013, they will in 2014, which is a solid vintage for the estate, and this region of the Languedoc. The style here is ripe, yet the wines have beautiful purity and plenty of freshness. In addition, the tannin quality is superb, and the wines are always a joy to drink. This is easily one of my favorite estates from the south of France. (JD) Inner quote mark (4/2015)

K&L Notes

Chateau Puech Haut is the passion project of Gerard Bru who is known for taking no half measures. When he wanted a vineyard, he sought out incredible terroir in an undeveloped region and over time created one of the largest properties in the area. When he wanted a chateau for the property, he transplanted a classical villa from the city of Montpellier to the site stone by stone. Paying hommage to the region when they were excavating the site, an ornamental ram's head from an ancient church was discovered and became the emblem of the estate. As for wine, with Michel Rolland starting the project and now with Phillipe Cambie (one of the greats of Chateauneuf du Pape) acting as his consulting winemaker, the wines too are made by no half measure. The "La Closerie" is a blend of equal parts Syrah and Grenache from the commune of Pic Saint Loup. It has incredible intensity and focus. Delicious to drink now or cellar for 5 to 10 years. This wine howls from the ruggedly beautiful Pic St. Loup appellation in the vast windswept reaches of the Languedoc, and delivers a bold elaboration of well-ripened, magnanimous plum, blackberry and cassis fruits, revealing lavish spice, garrigue, roasted fig and meaty elements. Hardly for the faint of palate, this voluminous, brazenly aromatic wine engages your glass and senses with richness, depth and intensity. Pairs well with rustic stews or a barley and wild mushroom risotto.

From the off the radar appellation of Pic St. Loup in the Languedoc comes this awesome blend of Grenache and Syrah! The wine shows copious amounts of brambly black fruit with notes of blueberry, cassis and Chambord. Tobacco and spice emerge in the glass with deep minerality. The "Closerie" has that rich concentration that keeps you engaged with flavors that unfold over the course of hours. Definitely cellar worthy but it has so much sexy fruit and spice, it's hard to resist now. Puech Haut is one of the great producers of the Languedoc and for a wine of this quality at this price we don't expect it to last long.
