2010 Castiglion del Bosco Brunello di Montalcino

SKU #1207697 96 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark Fabulous aromas of oranges, peaches and mahogany follow through to a full body with rich, chewy tannins and a long, flavorful finish. This is dense, tight, powerful, compressed and incredibly structured. Inner quote mark (1/2015)

Outer quote mark The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a ripe and fruit-forward expression that bursts with energy and red fruit intensity even at this young stage in the wine's life. Thick layers of cherry, blackberry, cassis, vanilla and cinnamon give the wine a bold, opulent personality. The tannins are super tame and docile, even for this more structured vintage. The wine boasts a medium build with bright garnet and ruby highlights. I think Castiglion del Bosco does a great job of executing and delivering this softer style of Brunello that works so well as a companion to the hearty, wintery foods we love most. You can drink it in the near or long term. It has that level of aging flexibility. The 2010 vintage is a great one to taste and buy. Massimo Ferragamo's Castiglion del Bosco shows the fruits of hard labor and major winery investments with the 2010 vintage. This stellar vintage shows us what his vineyards are capable of because the quality of fruit is so good. I can't wait to try the vineyard-designate Campo del Drago Brunello that was not ready at the time of my tasting. The house style favors softness and opulence, but this vintage adds the structure and brightness for truly great wines and longer drinking windows. (ML) Inner quote mark (2/2015)

Outer quote mark Complex and elegant, with cherry, licorice, leather and incense flavors. The firm grip of tannins quickly takes over, but this is long, echoing leather and spice. (BS) Inner quote mark (6/2015)

Outer quote mark Castiglion del Bosco 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is expressive and beautifully layered in the glass. Crushed flowers, dried cherries, spices, mint and worn-in leather open up nicely in the glass. The flavors are dark and bold throughout, with plenty of mid-palate sweetness that gives the wines its upfront appeal and sense of immediacy. At the same, time, though, there is plenty of supporting structure. This is one of the more open 2010s readers will come across. As such, it is likely to offer its best drinking sooner rather than later. The creamy, textured finish only adds to the wine's considerable appeal today. (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2015)

This is ideal for those looking to pick up a well-priced, earlier drinker from the 2010 Brunello crop. Aromas of cherries, dried florals, wood spice and minerals join a fleshy palate of delicious fruit with fine tannins and excellent overall balance. Drink now or over the next few years.

Ripe aromatics, dark fruit, wood spice, cigar box. On the palate succulent juicy fruits, ripe, fleshy tannins and good weight. Approachable and open even as a young wine. A nice option for drinking young while your other 2010 Brunelli mature.

If old school is more your bag, look no further than this traditional but forward wine. Great notes of crushed herbs, potpourri and maraska cherries. A few years down should be well rewarded but with tannins this fine it is accessible now. Serve with a lamb sugo over some fresh pappardelle.

Very user friendly Brunelli, Beautiful blackberry, cherry and lightly toasted oak on the nose. Full and silky, with berry and cherry flavors and soft tannins. This is the 2010 you can drink sooner then later. Stock up on the Bosco, so it will keep you hands off the long-term 2010 Brunellis.

The values just keep coming - 2010 gave us an amazing number of exceptional and ageworthy Brunelli at prices that should make the Bordeaux producers nervous. The wonderfully powerful and complex Castiglion Del Bosco is another winner. Layers reveal themselves slowly releasing lovely bright fruit notes over a more savory and spicy core. The differing notes of dried cherries, flower petals and bright fresh berries all mingled with exotic spices absolutely sing on the palate. The 2010s show well now and this is no exception, but I'm putting some down for 10-15 years.

The nose is dense, brooding pools of plum, earth, smoke and hints of wood spice. On the palate the wine is powerful, broad, deep, a muscularly vibrant presence that brings the fruit to life. The wine finishes very long, with a great central focus with hints of wood spice in the finish.
Drink from 2015 to 2030
