2011 Law Estate "Audacious" Paso Robles Red Wine

 The 2011 Audacious (38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Syrah, 18% Grenache and 8% Petit Sirah) reminds me of a Howell Mountain Cabernet with its creme de cassis and purple fruits, lead pencil shavings, caramelized meats and chalky minerality. As with the other 2011s from this estate, it has full-bodied richness and depth, solid mid-palate concentration and building tannin that comes through on the finish. It's a terrific wine that will have 10-15 years of longevity. Located high up on the west side of Paso Robles, at an elevation of 1,950 feet, Law Estate is run by Don and Susie Law and the wines are made by rock star winemaker Scott Hawley. This is one of the most exciting new estates in Paso Robles today, and I was blown away by the wines. These are full-throttle efforts that make the most of the appellation.  (8/2014)

 This booming, boozy blend of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Syrah, 18% Grenache and 8% Petite Sirah is properly named, opening with fragrant notes of red berries, toasted sage and mocha. It’s juicy up front, then gets serious in the midpalate, with tobacco and wild game. Acidity shines through the alcohol on the end.  (3/2015)

 The 2011 Audacious might be the most promising of these wines. Beams of acidity and tannin run through the fruit in a vivid, striking wine endowed with tremendous purity and vibrancy. Grilled herbs, smoke, tobacco and licorice are some of the many notes that add complexity on the finish. What a gorgeous wine this is. The 2011 is 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Syrah, 18% Grenache, 8% Petite Sirah. Law is without question one of the most exciting and promising young estates I have seen anywhere. Don and Susie Law have spared no expense in amassing a considerable expanse of land dotted with dramatic, high-altitude vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles. Scott Hawley oversees farming and winemaking. The winery is architecturally striking but functionally quite simple. These are absolutely gorgeous, voluptuous wines made all the more remarkable by the age of the vines, which is just a few years. Law has everything in place to be in a position to challenge some of Paso's big-name estates in the near future, but its true potential goes far beyond Paso Robles. Law has the potential to establish itself as one of the top wineries in the world, and I say that as someone who has visited virtually every reference-point estate in Bordeaux, Burgundy, California and Italy within the last 12 months.
