2011 Law Estate "Intrepid" Paso Robles Syrah

SKU #1200783 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The inky-colored 2011 Intrepid checks in as a blend of 100% Syrah that spent 22 months in 50% new French oak barrels. It's another smoking effort from this estate that gives up classy framboise, black licorice, chocolatey oak and toasted spice to go with a full-bodied, layered and thrillingly pure profile on the palate. Top class all the way, it will be better in another year and have upward of a decade of longevity. Located high up on the west side of Paso Robles, at an elevation of 1,950 feet, Law Estate is run by Don and Susie Law and the wines are made by rock star winemaker Scott Hawley. This is one of the most exciting new estates in Paso Robles today, and I was blown away by the wines. These are full-throttle efforts that make the most of the appellation. Inner quote mark (8/2014)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Winemaker Scott Hawley delivers deep and dark aromas of blueberry and mint against a backdrop of bacon fat and barrel smoke. The mouthfeel is rich and lush, with more blueberry plus anise, black licorice and a canvas of minty herbs that also reveal a touch of bitterness. Inner quote mark (2/2015)

90 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Layers of cassis, blackberry jam, spices and new leather all flesh out in the 2011 Intrepid, Law's 100% Syrah. The 2011 is overt and built on pure fruit. This is one of the sweeter wines in the range, partly the result of slightly higher toast levels in the barrels. Although not quite as compelling as the very best wines in the range, the 2011 is unique and poised for far greater things once the vines get older and the winemaking team gains more experience with the site. Law is without question one of the most exciting and promising young estates I have seen anywhere. Don and Susie Law have spared no expense in amassing a considerable expanse of land dotted with dramatic, high-altitude vineyards on the west side of Paso Robles. Scott Hawley oversees farming and winemaking. The winery is architecturally striking but functionally quite simple. These are absolutely gorgeous, voluptuous wines made all the more remarkable by the age of the vines, which is just a few years. Law has everything in place to be in a position to challenge some of Paso's big-name estates in the near future, but its true potential goes far beyond Paso Robles. Law has the potential to establish itself as one of the top wineries in the world, and I say that as someone who has visited virtually every reference-point estate in Bordeaux, Burgundy, California and Italy within the last 12 months. Inner quote mark (5/2014)

90 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Firm, rich, dense and gutsy, with a muscular mix of tannins and notes of dark berry, loamy earth, crushed rock and savory. Ends with tannic grip. Syrah. Drink now through 2027. 537 cases made. Inner quote mark (3/2015)
