Outer quote mark *Best Buy* Smooth and light, this single-malt Scotch segues effortlessly from vanilla, butterscotch and coconut sweetness to soft smokiness and back again, finishing on a zesty hint of citrus flavor. (KN) Inner quote mark (12/2015)

Outer quote mark American Oak is new to the Auchentoshan core range in 2014 and is the first release from this Lowland distillery to be matured solely in first-fill bourbon casks. An initial note of rosewater, then Madeira, vanilla, developing musky peaches, and icing sugar. Spicy fresh fruit on the palate, chili notes, and more Madeira and vanilla. The finish is medium in length, and spicy to the end. (GS, Winter 2014) Inner quote mark

K&L Notes

A simple working-man's whisky that really hits the spot and covers a lot of ground for a bargain of a price. Made from various whiskies aged in refill bourbon barrels, the Auchentoshan American oak is full of sweet vanilla, hints of coconut, with a finish that goes almost tropical. I love this whisky. It's no frills, to-the-point, yet hip and conscious of what it has to offer. Use it in a cocktail in place of your favorite bourbon, and watch it shine.

Yes, it's woody, but also graceful. There's a clear American oak presence accompanied by notes of cedar and sandalwood. Honey and light caramel trickle out with scents of cherry cough drops, baking spices, coconut, and dried flowers. The palate is more austere than the nose lets on with few sweet flavors. The wood and the spice take prominence with grippy tannins and flavors of shellac followed by notes of cardamom, clove, and mint. The Scotch has a viscous and mouth-coating texture, especially with an addition of water. A dry dusty wood finish caps things off into a gentle and lengthy finish.
