Readers should not miss the 2011 Sumo, a blend of 85% Petite Sirah, 13% Syrah and 2% Viognier. Sadly, there are only 200 cases of this stunning Petite Sirah-dominated red. Its inky/purple color is followed by a sumptuous perfume of violets, blueberries, blackberries, camphor and a hint of graphite. This full-bodied, rich effort is the finest wine in the Keplinger portfolio. It should age effortlessly for 15-20 years. (RP)

Vinous
Keplinger's 2011 Sumo tastes like a young wine right out of tank, such is the purity of its fruit. Cloves, menthol, tar, licorice and blueberries meld together in an intense, inky Petite Sirah loaded with class. I would drink the 2011 early and cellar the 2010 for another few years. A juicy, expressive finish rounds out this soft, beautifully contoured wine. (AG)

Bright medium ruby. Aromas of blackberry, violet, mint and game, plus a whiff of flinty reduction. Spicy, savory and dry, with brisk acidity and a saline quality energizing the dark berry, licorice and spice flavors. Can't match the outstanding 2010 for sheer richness or flavor development. This backward wine finishes with big, serious tannins that call for patience (or time in a decanter). (ST) 91+

Fully ripened, with plum, blackberry and wild berry notes. Chewy and tannic, with iodine and creosote accents. Ends with a crushed rock minerality. (JL)
