Outer quote mark Readers should not miss the 2011 Sumo, a blend of 85% Petite Sirah, 13% Syrah and 2% Viognier. Sadly, there are only 200 cases of this stunning Petite Sirah-dominated red. Its inky/purple color is followed by a sumptuous perfume of violets, blueberries, blackberries, camphor and a hint of graphite. Cloves, menthol, tar, licorice and blueberries meld together in an intense, inky Petite Sirah loaded with class. I would drink the 2011 early and cellar the 2010 for another few years. Spicy, savory and dry, with brisk acidity and a saline quality energizing the dark berry, licorice and spice flavors. Can't match the outstanding 2010 for sheer richness or flavor development. - This sweeping inland territory (an AVA on its own right), encompassing El Dorado, Fiddletown, Shenandoah and Amador, has been on the grape-growing map since the Gold Rush. With the exception of high-altitude El Dorado, the vineyards here are sun-baked and hot—in other words, best suited to old-vine zinfandel, petit sirah and Rhône varietals. The cooler climes of El Dorado are ideal for cabernet, chardonnay and merlot.
