2012 Hirsch Vineyards "San Andreas Fault" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

SKU #1195659 95 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Representing both the fog-cooled western ridges of the Hirsch estate and the slightly sunnier inland ridges, this is a particularly tense, energetic Pinot Noir from coastal Sonoma. The wine’s flavor and structure are almost indistinguishable, its sandy grip delivering cool, pristine, penetrating flavors of rosy spice and tilled soil. It remains firm and bright even with three days of air, a testament to the maturity of the vines that grew the wine, some of which were part of David Hirsch’s initial planting in 1980. Let its lean power unwind for a few years before opening it with something as simple as a roast chicken, allowing the wine to take center stage. Inner quote mark (6/2016)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark The San Andreas Fault is Hirsch’s flagship wine, pulling from parcels all around the vineyard. Notes of red berry and earth with orange and grapefruit zest, pink peppercorn and mixed spice. Persistent, tactile tannin and moderate acidity with a long spiced finish. (ECB) Inner quote mark (1/2015)

From high atop the Sonoma Coast mountains comes this always incredible 2012 Hirsch S.A. Pinot Noir. It is full of fresh picked wild cherry, baking spices, bright acid, a hint of saline, with great oak integration. This wine will absolutely reward patience in the cellar.

I have been waiting a long time for this wine to be released, and of course, it wasn't in vain. Bright red fruit with layers of rose petals, cinnamon, forest floor and herbs. Acidity is nicely integrated and the tannins are apparent. After a couple of hours in a decanter, the wine opens up beautifully and shows incredibly. If you're patient, several years in your cellar will be even better.
