2010 Hirsch Vineyards "East Ridge" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

SKU #1194837 95 points Wine & Spirits

Outer quote mark Since 2010, when winemaker Ross Cobb joined grower David Hirsch at his far-coast vineyard in Fort Ross–Seaview, the team began creating barrel selections from their oldest blocks on the east and west ridges of the vineyard. This selection is from three blocks on the eastern ridges, planted mostly to heritage clones, including Mount Eden, Swan and Pommard. There’s something great in this 2010, a cool, uneven vintage that appears to have favored these vines, yielding a wine that handles its structure with an impression of lightness, one that contrasts the stony earthiness of its tannins with sunny notes of woodland fruit. For now, the wine’s beauty is most apparent in the end, a lasting impression that suggests this will grow increasingly complex and expressive over the next ten years. Inner quote mark (4/2013)

Outer quote mark A delicate, silky mouthfeel makes this wine feel light and vibrant, yet there’s nothing light about the flavors. Notes of wild cherries, cranberries, Dr. Pepper, anise, pine and savory spices explode on the palate, and they lead to a long, dry finish. Give it 5–6 years in the cellar. *Cellar Selection* Inner quote mark (4/2013)

92 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark This is more elegant though otherwise similar to the 2009 version with its red berry fruit liqueur, spice and soft floral aromas. There is excellent verve and intensity to the tight, restrained and focused medium-bodied flavors that possess fine mid-palate concentration, all wrapped in a dusty, mouth coating and well-balanced finish that delivers outstanding length. This built-to-age beauty is presently quite youthfully austere and patience will absolutely be required. *Outstanding* Inner quote mark (10/2013)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2010 Pinot Noir East Ridge is quite soft and open within the context of the year. Rose petals, red cherries, spices and licorice are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. A burst of intensely perfumed, expressive fruit flows across the weightless finish. The 2010 is beguiling, but not an obvious wine by any stretch. Hirsch adds that this parcel gets a little more morning sun, hence the richness of the fruit relative to some of the other wines in the range. In this vintage, that extra warmth was fundamental. A part of East Ridge is planted with Pommard clones on heavily phylloxerated rootstocks that naturally produce small yields. (AG) Inner quote mark (7/2013)

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark A complex bouquet offers ripe red berries, potpourri, star anise and cola, with a bright mineral quality adding lift. Smoky, focused and pure, with sappy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that flesh out in the mid-palate and display a plush, velvety quality. Shows an appealing blend of richness and vigor and finishes on a gently tannic note, with impressive persistence and lingering sweetness. (ST) Inner quote mark (5/2013)
