2011 Chateau Montelena "Estate" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1194101 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Bright ruby-red. Captivating, high-pitched aromas of cassis, licorice pastille, bitter chocolate, violet, rose petal and mocha. Juicy and tightly wound, with fresh acidity energizing the middle palate but keeping the wine's dark berry flavors restrained today. There's a lightly peppery quality that gives away the vintage, but this highly aromatic wine is a big success for the year and very well made. (ST) Inner quote mark (5/2014)

Outer quote mark This cold rainy year has a bad reputation (some in Napa didn’t even pick), but the Montelena is one of the valley’s successes, with Bordeaux-like elegance, a red fruit profile, bright acidity and silky-soft tannins. Typically, the blend includes 20% hillside vineyard grapes - for this wine it was 35%. Aromas of lavender, earth, bay leaves and spice jump out of the glass and rich minerality ties together the savoury, subtle flavors. (EM) Inner quote mark (6/2018)

Outer quote mark A red with blueberry and cherry character, plus hints of bark. Medium body with fine tannins and a savory finish. Fine wine for the vintage. (JS) Inner quote mark (5/2014)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Pale to medium garnet-purple colored, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate features notes of cranberries, black raspberries and warm red currants with touches of garrigue, lavender and wild thyme. Medium-bodied with understated, chewy tannins and just enough freshness, it finishes with pleasant herb and toast flavors. (LPB) Inner quote mark (2/2018)

91 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a pretty wine from Chateau Montelena. Expressive floral and savory notes add complexity to the dark, pliant fruit in a soft, open Cabernet that is already quite tasty. I expect the 2011 will drink well early, but then again, these wines can be deceptively age worthy. That said, there are no hard edges or vegetal notes at all. Montelena's 2011 Estate impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. (AG) Inner quote mark (12/2014)

2011, rain, boo, right? Nope, think again on this one: Montelena is so old school about their picking regime, they picked before the drenching rains of the later fall of 2011. The rest of the year was cool, true, but basically the year that Napa became Bordeaux-for-a-season. This wine, tasted January 2018, initially shows an aroma that could be called herbal, maybe mineral, but then the red fruit flavor shows up, intense and alluring. It's the vintage, out of a lineup, I kept thinking about again.
