1990 Gentaz-Dervieux "Côte Brune - Cuvée Réservée" Côte-Rôtie

SKU #1193835 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark Since bottling, the 1990 appears to have put on weight. It is not as rich as the 1991, and by the standards of Gentaz, it is less interesting than his 1982, 1983, 1985, and 1988. However, it is a charming, medium-weight Côte Rôtie with a terrific fragrance, as well as a lovely, fat, luscious personality. (RP) Inner quote mark (12/1992)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Firm in texture, with earthy, barnyardy aromas and flavors and enough ripe blackberry and cherry notes to bring it around. A distinctive wine that lovers of old-style Rhônes will especially like. Inner quote mark (4/1993)

K&L Notes

Robert Parker, Jr. writes in his 1997 Rhône book, "One of Côte-Rôtie's greatest winemakers, Marius Gentaz, who is brother-in-law of Albert Dervieux, used to produce a mere 600-800 cases of wine from his three acres of vines on the Côte Brune. Consequently, his winemaking genius was never widely known. Gentaz's wines are now even more impossible to find since he leased to Rene Rostaing all of his old vineyards except for a 1-acre parcel of 65-year old vines on the Côte Brune. I have always found his wines to be among the finest of the appelation. They are not as powerful, oaky, and thick as those of Guigal, nor as rustic and backward as those produced by his brother-in-law...they are marvels of both finesse and richness."
