2013 MacRostie Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

SKU #1191633 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark The largest production offering of this variety for this producer, this features fruit sourced from a who’s who of local growers, including Sangiacomo, Dutton and Martinelli, in addition to the estate-run Wildcat Mountain Vineyard. The result is satisfyingly impressive in viscous oak, graham cracker and Meyer lemon. Tangy and flinty on the finish, it’s smooth and focused. (VB) Inner quote mark (2/2016)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Pure, clean and juicy, with ripe apple, pear and melon flavors that are refreshing and lively, long and persistent, keeping the fresh fruitiness front and center. Drink now. (JL) Inner quote mark (7/2015)

K&L Notes

MacRostie's Sonoma Coast bottling is definitely a top choice for an under-$20 California Chardonnay. Grapes were sourced from several select Sonoma Coast vineyards including the "A-list" Sangiacomo Vineyard, vineyards belonging to the Dutton and Martinelli estates, and MacRostie's own estate properties. The beautifully ripe and pristine fruit was whole-cluster pressed into 20% new French oak for fermentation where it aged for an additional 6 months. A few lots were fermented in stainless steel to retain some special emphasis on aromatic fruit characteristics. From MacRostie: "The wine is pale straw gold in color. Delicate floral aromas introduce this wine followed by lemon citrus and peach stone fruit notes. This wine has a soft entry with an essence of spice from a pie crust and candied orange peel flavors. There is pronounced weight in the mid-palate and finishes with a crisp yet lasting lemon citrus zest on the tongue."
