Harvested in the first week of November, with tiny yields, the 2011 Syrah II Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is flat-out gorgeous. Fermented with 20% stem inclusion and richer and more masculine than the Larner Vineyard, with ripe raspberry, ground pepper, toast, underbrush, roasted meat and big crushed stone-like minerality, it flows onto the palate with a medium to full-bodied, firm and structured feel. Still playing in the house style of highlight elegance and finesse over power and richness, it needs another 1-2 years of bottle age and will have 12-15 years of ultimate longevity. Drink 2015-2026.
Paul Lato continues to knock it out of the park and I can’t say enough about the quality coming from this estate. Across the board, the wines show classic, varietally correct profiles that always show finesse and elegance, yet back it up with layers of fruit and texture. (JD)

Lato's 2011 Syrah Il Padrino Bien Nacido Vineyard is wonderfully vivid in the glass. Crystalline and layered, the 2011 impresses for its overall balance. The addition of 2% whole clusters works magic here, and gives the wine a sense of lift while not detracting at all from its depth. Sage, rosemary and graphite notes all add complexity to the dark fruit. A striking, beautifully delineated finish rounds things out in grand style. The Padrino is one of Paul Lato's finest 2011s. Lato gave the 2011 Il Padrino 100% new French oak barrels, all of which it handles beautifully. (AG)
