2011 Maison Angelot Mondeuse Bugey

SKU #1191030

Maison Angelot is run by the brothers Eric and Philippe Angelot. Their 57 acres of vineyards are divided into about 20 different parcels, some hillside and others along the valley floor. Harvest is both manual and with machine (depending on the parcel), and their modern winery houses temperature-controlled stainless-steel and fiberglass tanks. The mondeuse is 100% destemmed and fermented through carbonic maceration preserving freshness and brightness delivering a wine similar to a Beaujolais with more spice qualities.

This Mondeuse has so much character and complexity! I absolutely love the beautiful aromatics of bramble, bark and herbs intertwined with great fruits like crunchy cranberry and bright cherry. The wine is quite light in body with tons of acidity, medium tannin, minerality and bright red fruits.

One of my favorite new reds in the store, this Mondeuse is handled all carbonically, similar to a Beaujolais. It has bright red fruit notes of strawberries and cherries. Tons of spice too, like cinnamon and allspice. No oak here, the grapes just give off these flavors on their own and that's what makes them special. The wine is more medium bodied and has bright acid, almost mouth watering. You'll want a little food here and I think a roast duck or chicken with a little fruit glaze would make an ideal pairing. Add some roasted root vegetables like parsnips and carrots to bring the flavors full circle. A terrific everyday red with something special to say.

I don't really get how this is possible. It's so good and so cheap. This hits on so many levels for me. Everything you love about high quality Burgundy/Beaujolais, with the nervy intensity of Mondeuse. Depth, spice, richness, but not heavy at all. So versatile and exciting, but familiar and comforting. A fabulous wine at any price, so for less than $13 it's like you should probably buy a case, ya know?
