Balvenie 25 Year Old Single Barrel Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1189554 Whisky Advocate

Light gold, with good intensity and a more noticeable malty note than is common with this distillery, as well as touches of daffodil and dried honeycomb. The wood influence appears minimal to start with, but more vanilla creeps through in time; water brings out almond milk. Opens into clementine peel, pomelo, then cooked dessert apple. The palate is clean and forward; even slightly hot when neat. Remarkably assertive for a 25 year old. (DB, Spring 2015)

K&L Notes

*Special Order Only - based on availability from the distributor* The Single Barrel 25 is among The Balvenie's standard range, albeit from different barrels as time goes on. The distillery's note: "The Balvenie Single Barrel 25 Year Old is the ultimate expression of the relationship between craftsmanship, wood and time. The oldest of our Single Barrel range, this exceptional spirit is bottled from refill American oak casks that have lain in our warehouses for over twenty-five years. Each cask is subtly different, yet hand-selected by our Malt Master for its familiar sweet, honeyed characteristics. Each bottling forms a limited edition of no more than 300 hand-numbered bottles drawn from a single cask, making every bottle unique and unrepeatable. The Balvenie Single Barrel 25 Year Old is non chill-filtered and bottled at a higher strength of 47.8% ABV offering whisky enthusiasts a 'straight from the cask' experience."

For all the fanfare that big old sherried Speysiders get, the wonderful single cask 25 year from Balvenie truly delivers what I would consider to be the most authentic Speyside experience. Its character is not masked by any wine influence and the characteristic Balvenie deep, rich spirit does wonders after two and a half decades in a hogshead. Deep oak, wild honey and baking spice without any green or vegetative qualities. Ultra creamy and decadent on the palate, seamless and satisfying, with complexity building as it finishes. Honey and spice and everything nice. Big oak, but good oak.
