1997 Beau-Séjour Bécot, St-Emilion (1.5L)

SKU #1183701

“Beau-Séjour Bécot was founded in 1921 by Michel Bécot on an estate that dates back to 1787, just a few minutes walk from the village of Saint-Émilion and adjacent to neighbour Clos Fourtet. Now run by his grand-daughter Juliette Becot, the estate was reinstated as a Premier Grand Cru Classé in 1996, after a rather ignominious demotion in the 1980s. The vineyards, spread over 16.5 hectares, are rooted in unique limestone and clay soils, contributing to the distinct, complex flavors of their wines. The chateau's remarkable limestone caves, a network of ancient quarries, serve as the perfect aging cellars, enhancing the wines' character and depth. With a commitment to sustainable viticulture, Chateau Beau-Séjour Bécot continues to uphold its legacy of producing world-class wines. With a heavenly nose of toasty oak and blackberries, the 1997 is a very elegant wine to enjoy now. (8/2023)

Beau-Sejour-Becot was elevated to Premier Cru Classé status in 1996 after nearly a decade of renovations and with the help of winemaker and consultant Michel Rolland. The outstanding quality achieved during this period is on full display here. The beautifully aged St. Emilion is full of heady aromas of cherry brandy, muddled strawberry, soft vintage leather, smoky meat and quality cigar tobacco. The tannins are supple, softened by time and fully integrated with the plush texture. There's still plenty of vibrancy and life left in this, with great freshness and acidity to lift everything up on the long finish. If you're looking to impress a group of people over dinner, this does the trick for a reasonable price.

A perfect 5 for a delicious 26 year old Right bank beauty. SO elegant on the nose and palate-Lots of bottle bouquet here with some sweet blackberries and toasted oak. Very sweet on the palate too-still lively and seductive-round, soft tannins and the fruit just jumps out at you. I have always loved the 1997 vintage, which some critics said were too light for the long haul. This wine is perfect in 2023-so 26 years old and still going strong. This is a superb winner in all respects. Rack of lamb anyone?
