2012 Siduri "Soberanes Vineyard" Santa Lucia Highlands Pinot Noir

SKU #1183473 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark One of the darker colored efforts from Adam, the 2012 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard (located right next to Garys’) offers plenty of cassis, licorice, toast and spice to go with a rich, upfront feel on the palate. I love the purity here, and it has great mix of richness, texture and focus. Enjoy this beauty over the coming 4-6 years, although I wouldn’t be surprised to see it evolve for longer either. This was another massive lineup by proprietors Adam and Dianna Lee. The 2012s are solid across the board. In addition to their Santa Lucia Highlands releases, I've also included their North Coast and Oregon wines as well. Tel. (707) 578-3882; www.siduri.com Inner quote mark (10/2014)

Outer quote mark Black earth, violet and crushed-pepper spice form an intriguing and powerful nose. Bright red fruits on the start of the palate give way to seriously savory flavors of espresso and dark chocolate in the midpalate, followed by a finish of elderberry, sour cherry and coffee. Outer quote mark Vivid ruby. Sexy, high-pitched aromas of black raspberry, rose oil and smoky minerals, with an exotic hint of passion fruit in the background. Juicy and incisive on the palate, offering gently sweet dark berry and cherry-cola flavors and a touch of star anise. Becomes more floral with air and finishes on notes of candied rose and cherry compote, with soft tannins and very good persistence. Inner quote mark (12/2013)

Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark *One Star* A bit of a study in contrasts when it is compared to its mate from the neighboring Rosella's Vineyard, this somewhat sturdier effort is fully ripe yet a bit more contained in fruit, and it finishes ever so slightly on the tough side. It is not aggressively tannic but could do with a few years of smoothing, and we anticipate that it will gradually find increased complexity and fruity expression with age. Outer quote mark Dark red stone fruits, flowers, mint, cloves and new leather all take shape in the 2012 Pinot Noir Soberanes Vineyard. Juicy and vibrant, with lovely underlying energy, the 2012 shows the darker, more virile side of Pinot within a forward style that is best enjoyed over the next few years. Readers will find plenty to like in these new and upcoming releases from Siduri. On average, the 2012 Pinots from the Santa Lucia Highlands are more consistent than the 2012 Sonoma Pinots, as yields were held a bit more in check, which meant that the wines required less bleeding in the cellar. This year, I also noted significant differences between the southern and northern parts of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Warmer microclimates and generally poorer soils were assets in 2012, a year in which yields were very hard to control. Interestingly, yields were also high in 2013, but by then the vines are in the second year of a drought cycle and the wines generally possess greater depth and complexity. Siduri's Sta. Rita Hills Pinots will be reviewed in our upcoming article on Santa Barbara County. Inner quote mark (7/2014)
