An awesome effort, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Chaupin comes from the cooler, northeast corner of the appellation and is 100% Grenache. Spring flowers, licorice, violets, crushed rock and layers of sweet Grenache fruit all flow to a full-bodied, clean, elegant 2005 that has everything in the right place. Drinking brilliantly now, it should continue to dish out loads of pleasure over the coming decade. (JD)

This gushes with boysenberry reduction, linzer torte and loganberry flavors allied to a rich, creamy mouthfeel. But there's also plenty of grip, with underlying notes of mocha, mineral, sweet toast and incense that add volume and definition to the lengthy finish. Drink now through 2030. 350 cases imported. Almost always one of my favorite wines in any vintage and the 2005 is no exception. Surprisingly, the Domaine de la Janasse Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Chaupin is slightly closed and compact but even so, everything is perfectly balanced and the wine is simply silky, full and smooth. With some coaxing, beautiful raspberry, kirsch, earth and an almost meaty character show up on the nose. The palate is medium to full bodied, compact but with perfect balance and a very long finish.

Inky violet. Fresh blackberry and boysenberry scents are complemented by olive, dark chocolate and anise. Weighty and sweet but focused, with juicy acidity adding lift and supple tannins extending through the finish. Manages to avoid being porty or overblown but this has remarkably deep dark fruit. (JR)
