2012 Anthill Farms "Demuth" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

SKU #1177320 94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2012 Pinot Noir Demuth Vineyard is a drop-dead gorgeous beauty. Vibrant, nuanced and delineated, the 2012 stands out for its clarity and detail. The flavors are wonderfully alive in the glass, while the balance of fruit, acidity and tannin is superb. The Demuth seems to have handled its recent bottling better than some of the other wines in the range. The inclusion of 50% stems lends an additional dimension of brightness to the expressive cranberry and pomegranate flavors. I was quite taken with the wines I tasted from Anthill Farms this year. Winemaker Anthony Filiberti works with a handful of sites in Sonoma and Mendocino counties to produce highly transparent, nuanced wines loaded with personality. The Anthill wines are typically made with a generous amount of stems and see very little new oak. All of the 2012s were in bottle at the time of my visit in January 2014. Some of the wines had just been bottled, but they all showed well. Anthill Farms remains one of California's most intriguing boutique wineries. Readers who can find the wines should not hesitate in giving them a try. (AG) Inner quote mark (2/2014)

Outer quote mark Brilliant red. Spicy raspberry and potpourri on the highly perfumed nose, with notes of Asian spices and cola adding complexity. Sweet, incisive red fruit and spicecake flavors show excellent clarity and pick up a suave floral quality with aeration. Finishes on a minerally note, with sneaky tannins coming in late and adding grip. This was vinified with 50% whole clusters, which no doubt accounts for the wine's spiciness. Outer quote mark Anthill’s Anthony Filiberti knows this vineyard well—he lives here, and farms it for Knez Winery, where he also makes the wine. It’s a rocky, west-facing hillside vineyard well above the valley floor, the pinot noir vines now over 30 years old. The 2012 is centered on red cherry tones that feel naturally sweet, balanced against earthen tannins and lifted by a scent of rose petals. It’s fresh, inviting and lively, ready to drink now with a duck terrine. Inner quote mark (10/2014)
