2011 Calera "Mills Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir

SKU #1176731 93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark One of the more subtle wines in the range, the 2011 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard impresses for its sense of proportion and balance. Nothing is out of place. Black cherries, plums, crushed flowers, mint and anise develop in the glass, but ultimately the Mills is mostly about sensual, radiant texture. The highly expressive, lifted finish is a thing of beauty. There is so much to admire here. In 2011, these own-rooted vines yielded a wine of true delicacy and finesse. Outer quote mark Four decades of experience shine on this Josh Jensen bottling, which mixes luxuriously ripe wild berries, raspberries and cola with the sharper spice of sweet clove and dried violet. It's bright with acidity, picking up licorice in the midpalate and finishing on a tart, slightly bitter note of crushed cranberry. This will sip well for a few years but is amazing now. Outer quote mark The 2011 Pinot Noir Mills comes all from the limestone soils of the Mills Vineyard. Seeing 100% whole cluster inclusion during fermentation, and then aged 18 months in 30% new French oak, it’s a medium-bodied, elegant effort that has notions of Asian spices, dried flowers, sappy underbrush and ripe cherries all emerging from the glass. Showing more rose petal and minerality with time in the glass, it has nicely integrated acidity and a seamless, pure profile that’s ideal for drinking over the coming 5-7 years or more. These latest releases from Calera are rock-solid across the board, and looking at the 2011 Pinot Noirs specifically, they show the best of the cooler vintage and are gorgeous wines. Starting with the two Chardonnays, these are both outstanding whites that represent serious value. Moving to the 2011s, these are beautiful wines across the board and show perfumed, fresh and lively profiles. (JD) Inner quote mark (8/2014)

Outer quote mark Fresh and snappy, with a vibrantly peppery, earth-laced core of red berry and blackberry flavors that are tightly wound, if a bit clipped on the finish. Ends with hints of anise and black licorice. Needs time. Best from 2015 through 2023. (JL, Web Only-2015) Inner quote mark
