1989 Climens, Barsac (375ml)

SKU #1170228 96 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Green-tinged straw color. Initially less expressive nose opened to show floral, herbal and vanillin notes as well as a pungent minerally quality. Very sweet but very suave, with fresh but perfectly integrated acidity serving to frame and intensify the superb, mineral-and-citric fruit. Can't match the '90 for pure size and power but the harmoniousness of this wine is truly striking. Very, very long and subtle on the aftertaste. A great Climens. I underrated this wine in its early days, as it was overshadowed by the more powerful, more phenolic '90. (ST) Inner quote mark (7/1998)

Outer quote mark Tasted at the Bordeaux Index’s Chateau Climens dinner. A little lighter in colour than the ’90, this ’89 Climens retains its glorious barley sugar, honeysuckle and peach-tinged nose with touches of ginger evolving with aeration. The palate is harmonious, supple and very pure with acacia honey, quince, apricot and noticeably less residual sugar on the finish than the aforementioned ’90. Superb, but the chateau bottle in April was better. (NM) Inner quote mark (11/2009)

Outer quote mark High-wired, super-focused, seductively creamy and beautifully balanced. The beam of lemon, honey, spice, pear and melon flavor shines through to a fresh, long finish. Tempting now. Inner quote mark (4/1995)

Outer quote mark Of the wonderful troika of wines produced at Château Climens in the 1988, 1989 and 1990 vintages, I have always had a very, very slight preference for the utterly classic 1988 over its two younger siblings. The 1989 Climens, at this particular tasting here in New York in September showed very well, but perhaps just a tad lower than my very high expectations for this wine. The nose was very pretty, but a bit riper and more tropical than I remember, as it offered up scents of pineapple, honey, new leather, tea leaves, dried oranges and crème brulée. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and just a tad forceful in style compared to more classic vintages of Climens (such as 1971, 1983, 1986 or 1988), but with lovely mid-palate depth, fine focus and excellent length and grip on the complex and poised finish. The 1989 Climens has now reached its apogee of maturity, but should continue to cruise along beautifully for several more decades. Inner quote mark (9/2009)

Outer quote mark Half bottle. Orange/tawny. Medium intensity. Burnt caramel notes. Quite fresh and pure. Distinctly tangy with a hint of orange peel. Not that sweet. But it stood up very well to a range of Indian sweetmeats. (JR) 18/20 points Inner quote mark (3/2012)
