1975 Trotanoy, Pomerol

SKU #1169254 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 1975 Trotanoy can be an extraordinary wine on the right day. This was the right day. Served blind from a magnum, unaware of its age, I was struck by the depth of its color. The bouquet is almost ineffably complex, a mixture of red and black fruit, black truffle (indicating its Pomerol origins), sage and dried rose petals. It was the delineation and sheer confidence of the aromatics that leaves you spellbound. The palate is beautifully structured, very Left Bank in style thanks to its tertiary nature, yet bridled with disarming tension and energy from start to finish. There is a twist of sour cherry right on the aftertaste, completing a stunning Trotanoy. I very much doubt I will ever encounter an example of this outstanding Pomerol as good as this again. Outer quote mark Fully saturated ruby-red. Pungent minerality lifts the aromas and flavors of blueberry and black cherry, with hints of ink, tar, cedar, coffee and violet providing further complexity. Enters the mouth wonderfully dense, structured and almost austere, with the tangy minerality providing cut and shape to the massive mouthfilling mid-palate. A very big and rich yet vibrant wine with a rising finish featuring noble tannins, excellent energy and lingering notes of black fruits, herbs and coffee. Still an infant and developing at a snail's pace. Interestingly, Jean-Claude Berrouet feels that this great wine is a technological masterpiece: at the time, Moueix and Berrouet decided on an exceptionally short cuvaison for the very small, thick-skinned berries of 1975 (only 11 days!), and the limited extraction enabled the wine to avoid picking up harsh, angular tannins. Outer quote mark At our New York tasting, we had a good bottle of the 1975, but I would peg it at the ninety percentile and I have had several bottles in recent times that included that extra ten percent of perfumed precision and complexity. In any case, this was not a hard wine to drink, as it blossomed beautifully to offer up scents of cherries, red plums, a bit of meatiness, cigar smok, a touch of nutskins, gravelly soil tones and a delicate touch of fresh herbs in the upper register. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied, and utterly suave in structure, with a rock solid core, great soil signature, melting tannins and outstanding length and grip on the impeccably balanced and complex finish.
