2006 ArPePe "Sassella" Stella Retica Riserva Valtellina Superiore

SKU #1165171 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2006 Valtellina Superiore Sassella Riserva Stella Retica is Nebbiolo from 50-year-old vines in the mountainous north of Italy. This is a delicate and feminine wine with pretty berry notes followed by pressed rose petal, very light spice, tar and licorice. It shows all the celebrated qualities of Nebbiolo in a much lighter and more approachable style. The wine is elegant and tight with streamlined tannins at the back. (ML) 90+ Inner quote mark (12/2015)

Outer quote mark From 50-year-old vines at 550 m, picked late and the wine is given extended maceration. Very pale brick red. Wonderfully subtle bouquet with real delicacy, something tarry, sun on rocks, and a hint of orange peel. I wonder when this was put on the market? It certainly seems well ready but with delightful transparency. Real freshness here. Inner quote mark (4/2014)

K&L Notes

Established in 1984 for Arturo Pelizzatti Perego, and now run by Arturo's children Isabella, Emanuele, and Guido, ArPePe makes rare wines that are a point of reference for the unique Valtellina terroir, where the famed Nebbiobo grape goes by the name Chiavennasca. New York Times wine writer Eric Asimov recently noted, "...no Italian-accented wine list can be considered in vogue these days without at least one of the excellent Valtellinas from ArPePe..." (3/2014) This offering comes from the Sassella zone and is raised in a combination of stainless and 50hl oak barrels. From the winery: "This Riserva offers the excitement of an incorruptible youth that time cannot diminish. Long aging adds complexity without changing the typical freshness. Immediately fulfilling to the nose with an elegant bouquet of roses, cherry and cranberry, its garnet colour - of rare brightness - captures you immediately. But it's the fresh taste, rich and persistent, which conquers the enthusiast from the very first sip. Thanks to its versatile young character it can pair well with all regional cuisine from Lombardy. To be served in large glasses at 15°C."
