2002 Frédéric Magnien Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru

SKU #1159090

From Allen Meadows: "Frédéric Magnien reports that 2002 was 'a very easy vintage to vinify even though the fermentations were quite slow. We had a primary fermentation of around 20 days versus only 12 in 2001. The '02s effectively received two extra days of cold maceration as I don't control the temperatures and since the crop was harvested at between 13 and 15° C, it took every bit of the two days for the temperatures to climb in the vats. In terms of the harvest, there was a bit less yield and with much thicker skins compared to 2001. Sugars were very good as 70% of the wines were not chaptalized. The other important aspect is that there is no hardness to the wines as the tannins are very ripe and round, in fact almost sweet. And thanks to the thick skins, the wines are dense with a solid feel to them and while they were perhaps less classic than the '01s, it still is a relatively classic vintage. I prefer 2001 in terms of terroir but '02 is prettier and denser'. Magnien is a believer of at least 6 months of élevage after the malos are complete and since they were long and slow, he will bottle several months later than he did in '01, which is to say in February or March, without fining or filtration... This is a group of wines that emphasizes extraction and the deep colors that accompany it." (Burghound.com, 01/2004)
