2002 Monbousquet, St-Emilion

 A strong performance in a difficult vintage, the 2002 Monbousquet (60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc) reveals abundant aromas of espresso, sweet black currants and cherries, damp earth, compost, and new oak. It is a medium to full-bodied, fleshy offering with light tannin as well as a long finish. Drink it over the next 10-12 years. This is the home estate of Chantal and Gerard Perse, who have become the poster children for owners taking a less hallowed terroir and producing sumptuous, high quality wine. Readers should realize that Monbousquet is not meant to be cellared for 20-30 years. It is a beautifully made wine that has performed well in every blind tasting I have conducted, often out-scoring far more hallowed as well as expensive wines. (RP)  (4/2005)

 Deep red-ruby. Ripe, expressive aromas of plum, mocha, smoke and game. Lush, fat and sweet on entry, with captivating flavors of plum, redcurrant, tobacco, cedar and game. In a deceptively gentle, pliant style, but there's solid underlying structure here. Finishes with substantial fine tannins and sneaky length. Seems virtually unaffected by the bottling.  Gorgeous aromas of crushed berries, licorice, meat and cedar. Needs air. Full-bodied, with a crushed-velvet texture and loads of opulent fruit. Stays in the mouth. Juicy and exciting. Monbousquet often excels in difficult vintages and it did this year. Very well done. (JS)  (3/2005)

 Very sweet, very Merlot nose, very different from the best - perhaps this was the wine that smelt like Pinot Noir? Certainly tastes quite like Pinot Noir. Some tannins still. Sweet and rich.  (11/2009)

Neal Martin's Wine Journal: "Tasted blind at Farr’s 2002 Bordeaux tasting. A fresh nose, nicely defined, lifted raspberry and wild strawberry interlaced with a scent of an artisan Italian delicatessen, just a slight hint of wild mushrooms developing to the point where it is redolent of a Pinot Noir! Medium-bodied palate, light tannins, crisp redcurrant and sour cherry, wild strawberry and exhibiting some piquancy on the lithe, feminine finish. Certainly a pretty, if slightly ephemeral Saint Emilion. Tasted October 2009." (1/2010)
