The 2012 needs quite a bit of time to unwind, but still only reveals a fraction of the potential I sensed when it was younger. Outer quote mark The Clary Ranch is located in the Petaluma Wine Gap and is one of the coldest microclimates in Sonoma County, with the Syrah here routinely harvested in November! The 2012 manages an octane of 11.5% and the wine is lovely in a low fat and very aromatic style, wafting from the glass in a youthfully complex and exceptional blend of cassis, grilled meats, stony soil tones, black pepper, espresso and a gentle topnote of violets. On the palate the wine is medium-full and intensely flavored, with fine focus and grip, a tightly-knit, tangy and beautifully balanced finish of excellent length and bounce. This wine is still on the young side and needs a few years in the cellar to blossom, but it will be excellent and will age very well. Inner quote mark (7/2014)

Former Pax assistant winemaker Duncan Arnot Meyers and cooper Nathan Roberts produce beautiful, terroir-driven, varietally pure small production wines. They launched in 2003 and have been slowly, steadily gaining cult status. Clary Ranch is in one of the coolest windiest parts of the Sonoma Coast appellation. It is a miracle that Syrah can even ripen here, much less make possible the stunning, Cote-Rotie-esque Syrahs that Arnot-Roberts has coaxed out of this vineyard since their first vintage working with it in 2006. 92 points, Stephen Tanzer in Vinous: "Bright violet color. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes raspberry, blueberry, cinnamon, smoky herbs and minerals. Tangy and precise, offering slow-to-open, gently sweet red and dark berry flavors plus hints of Asian spices and tangy minerality. Closes with outstanding clarity, energy and persistence, leaving peppery spice and mineral notes behind." (05/2014)
