2011 Wind Gap "Sceales Vineyard" Sonoma County Old Vine Grenache

SKU #1154588 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

(from a sandy vineyard planted in the 1930s; 50% whole clusters; 80% raised in concrete eggs and the rest in neutral French oak): Bright red. A highly aromatic nose combines red berries, incense, lavender, anise and Asian spices. Juicy raspberry and cherry flavors provide excellent palate coverage, with tangy acidity giving the wine lift and verve. Rich but very lively with excellent finishing thrust, silky tannins and lingering sappiness. (6/2013)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Wind Gap's 2011 Grenache Old-Vine Sceales Vineyard has the depth and richness that is missing in some of the other 2011s. Floral notes meld into expressive red berries, spices, and sage. This is a Grenache very much dominated by aromatics, but there is also an attractive firmness in the tannin that holds all the elements together. Mahle used 50% whole clusters and aged 80% of the wine in concrete. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2018. This is another exciting, captivating set of wines from Wind Gap and Pax Mahle...Once again, I was deeply impressed with the range I tasted and can't recommend these wines highly enough.
