2012 Failla "Savoy Vineyard" Anderson Valley Pinot Noir

SKU #1154498 94 points Vinous

An addition to the range, Failla's 2012 Pinot Noir Savoy Vineyard, is fabulous. Dark red stone fruit, smoke tobacco and licorice jump from the glass in a vivid, structured Pinot endowed with stunning depth and nuance. The balance of fruit and minerality is simply compelling. Winemakers continue to be attracted to Savoy, Cliff Lede's vineyard in Anderson Valley. Few have made such a gorgeous wine on their first try. This is a great start from Failla. After many years juggling duties at both Turley and Failla, Ehren Jordan is now focused solely on his estate, but he still makes a dizzying array of wines. These Chardonnays and Pinots are essays into many of the truly great terroirs of Napa Valley, Sonoma and Mendocino. Personally I tend to gravitate towards the Sonoma Coast wines in this range, but there are plenty of fabulous wines from which to choose here. All of the 2012s were in bottle at the time of my tastings, in January 2014. (2/2012)

(the first vintage for this bottling): Good medium red. Sappy raspberry and red cherry on the nose. Round, fat and silky; nicely dry and broad if a bit youthfully reticent today. Strong red fruit, spice and earth elements carry nicely on the subtly persistent aftertaste. (6/2014)

K&L Notes

Failla Wines: "A change in ownership of this storied vineyard west of Philo offered us an entrée to the source of many Pinots we’ve admired over the years: Littorai, Peay, Radio Coteaux to name a few. We believe our inaugural vintage does its cousins proud. The nose seduces with ripe, dark fruits such as fig and black currant, underscored with hints of peppercorn and cured meat. A savory palate with great grip is rounded by elegant, fine tannins. Will age well for 7-10 years."
