Outer quote mark The 2010 Brunello di Montalcino is a lush and layered expression that shows a dark and rich side of Sangiovese. Sweet fruit and Morello cherry lift first from the glass with impressive intensity. After a few brief moments, the wine begins to show delicate nuances of cinnamon, nutmeg, grilled herb, ash and smoke. Ultimately, the wine delivers more bang to the nose and follows with a tight, streamlined mouthfeel. I would suggest keeping this bottle in your cellar for three to five more years before popping the cork. Belpoggio's bottles always stand out in a crowd thanks to the elegantly embossed glass 'B' that replaces a traditional paper label. Enrico Martellozzo's estate is located in the promising Castelnuovo dell'Abate subzone of the appellation. (ML) Inner quote mark (2/2015)

Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Aromas suggest tilled soil, leather, dark berry and a whiff of barnyard. On the palate, notes of grilled herb, clove, black pepper, licorice and a hint of game add interest to the dark berry core. Brooding tannins provide support. Drink 2017–2022. Inner quote mark (5/2015)

Ho-Hum, just another really great 2010 Brunello. Deeply colored, this Gem offers up opulent aromas of red berry-driven fruit of cherry-like to plum-like characteristics intermingled with an almost Burgundian-like dried rose petal to violet-like quality, with just a touch of toasty oak in its background. In its broad, viscous, lush mouthfeel, this 2010 delivers layers of well defined flavors of the same, with excellent focus and complexity, great integration and depth, a silky, round mid-range, and an amazing powerful distinctiveness across all aspects of the palate. This Gem is long and creamy on the finish, and Rusty has ordered me to bring home at least a case or two of this Gem for future considerations. Drinking well with decanting and two hours of airing. Great Value! Don’t miss this Gem! ***** 14.0% ABV *****

Belpoggio comes from Montalcino’s southeast corner where the climate’s sunny exposition and rich soil give this wine its warm personality. Similar in style to their neighbor Ciacci Piccolomini, Belpoggio’s Brunello has an inviting fruit filled nose that shows plum, dried flowers with hints of spice that just flow from the glass. On the palate, its lushness is present, but unlike many “riper” styles this doesn’t sit on your palate. It has so much energy and freshness it is remarkable. On the palate more fruit comes through along with a bit of spice. If you’re going to drink this wine now, and want more minerality, you’re going to need to decant for a couple of hours. Otherwise, the fruitier character is very appealing at this young age and will be particularly good for new Brunello drinkers switching in from California.

This wine is 100% Sangiovese and a small marvel of class and power, especially when the vintage is taken into account. There is wonderful richness of fruit, which melds beautifully with the aristocratic oak, giving spicy scents which come through on the palate, too, right to this final licorice note. Dark-colored ruby with concentrated aromas of blackberries, dark cocoa powder and stony minerals. Full-bodied, with big dusty tannins; needs some air time.
