Pike Creek Port Finished Canadian Rye Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1151224

Like the Lot 40, Pike Creek is made at the Hiram Walker distillery in Canada, which is now run by Pernod Ricard. It's rye whiskey finished in Port barrels, which adds a sweeter red fruited note to the classic peppery flavors of the whiskey. Colby (the PR subsidiary) has been legendary in Canada for decades. We're now only getting a taste of what our northern neighbors have long known: Canadian rye whiskey is pretty dang delicious, especially with the sweeter edge of Port finishing. Reportedly this bottling is made up of 10-year-old rye, although the bottle doesn't mention it anywhere. The new rum-finished release that is replacing this has a big fat 10-year prominently on the label. Lessons learned.

- Canada's thriving wine industry is concentrated in the four provinces of Ontario, British Columbia, Quebec and Nova Scotia. Because of the extreme climates of these Region, grapes tend to be grown near large bodies of water, which balance the effects of the severe winters. For the same reason, snow-resistant North American grape varieties like Concord and Niagara, the French Vidal Blanc, Seyval Blanc and Baco Noir are grown in Canada. Additionally, Riesling, Chardonnay and Merlot are becoming more popular. The Canadian wine industry is most recognized as the largest producer of Icewine in the world.
