Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Slightly deeper and richer, yet also less expressive aromatically, the 2011 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard offers a darker, earthier profile, with black cherry, underbrush, pepper and ground herbs giving way to hints of rose petal and spice with air. Medium to full-bodied, it has impressive richness in the vintage, as well as beautiful mid-palate density and a seamless texture. Overall, it’s a structured effort that should be given another handful of years in the cellar, and consumed over the following decade. These latest releases from Calera are rock-solid across the board, and looking at the 2011 Pinot Noirs specifically, they show the best of the cooler vintage and are gorgeous wines. (JD)

The 2011 Pinot Noir Ryan Vineyard impresses for its depth and mid-palate density. Dark red and black stone fruit, leather and cloves are some of the notes that take shape in a pliant, yet structured Pinot that should drink well for many years. The Ryan finishes with substantial intensity and pulsating energy. (AG)

Here too there is plenty of menthol character to the fresh and ripe extract of red cherry and raspberry suffused nose. The lush and succulent middle weight flavors possess both good volume and solid mid-palate density, all wrapped in a delicious, dusty and lingering finish where a touch of dryness surfaces right at the end. I like this save for the balance-compromising dryness but because of it I would again suggest drinking this on the younger side with an appropriate dish.

K&L Notes
This Pinot Noir comes from Calera's organically farmed Mt. Harlan vineyards in the Gavilan Mountains, 25 miles east of Monterey Bay. The Ryan vineyard, like Calera's others, has limestone soils, which are prized above any other soil type for growing Pinot Noir. Combine that with the vineyard's average elevation of 2,200 feet--among the highest and coolest in California--and you get structured, intense Pinot. Winemaker notes: "Graceful aromas of rose petal, tea, cassis, and clay accent a beautiful strawberry brick hue. This 2011 Ryan is firmly structured and intense with classic Mt. Harlan mineral purity. Mouthwatering flavor of cranberry, sour cherry and calcium offer fascinating tension with the taut, well integrated tannins offering a bright and very complex wine, and definitely a candidate for cellaring."
