2011 Ancient Peaks Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1146792 Connoisseurs Guide

Outer quote mark **Good Value** Chocolate, toasty spice and an interesting suggestion of smoke are backed up by enough black cherry fruit to keep this bottling within fairly broad varietal lines, and its fruit manages to keep pace in the vaguely leathery, slightly astringent flavors that ensue. The wine, while not hugely tannic, does tend to get a bit dry at the finish, yet, in this era of rising Cabernet prices, this one offer a lot to like for the money. Inner quote mark (8/2014)

Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Smoke, plum jelly and a touch of violet form the aromas for this offering. The tannins are nicely thick, with prominent flavor profile of unsweetened blackberry jam. This meaty wine will improve with a bit more time in the bottle, so hold off until 2016. Inner quote mark (9/2014)

K&L Notes

Sourced from their estate Margarita Vineyard, the Ancient Peaks 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon simultaneously benefits from one of the coolest sites and longest growing seasons in the region. Combined with the diverse and ancient soil types of the vineyard, Ancient Peaks produces a Cabernet Sauvignon with excellent structure and depth. The wine was aged in French and American oak barrels for 15 months before bottling. From the winery: "The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with generous aromas of black fruit, toasty oak, caramel and cedar. The palate is elegantly layered with flavors of plum, cherry and blackberry, followed by trailing notes of black olive and cocoa. Fine tannins linger on a juicy, structured finish."

What a value! The folks at Ancient Peaks know how to manage the Paso Robles heat, and have come up with a Cabernet that tastes like a Napa bottling at double the price. It is rich, ripe and powerful, but also polished and seamless in the mouth. I think that anyone looking for mid-week Cabernet will be very impressed with this tasty wine!

One visit to the Ancient Peaks vineyards in Santa Margarita, and it becomes abundantly clear how special the land, the people and these wines truly are! Highly charming and expressive, it offers classic cab character of dark plumy fruit, cedar, bay leaf, and olive. Texturally this wine is juicy, but well framed by gentle tannin, acidity and mineral drive.
