2011 Domaine Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

SKU #1144561 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Pale silver-straw color. Enticing, pure aromas of lemon, white plum, wild herbs and menthol, lifted by a hawthorn topnote. Pliant, silky and fat but also fresh and precise, with complex, concentrated flavors of lemon, grapefruit pith, spices and powdered stone. Lovely classic vintage with texture, balance and depth. Finishes very long, with subtle sweetness and noteworthy clarity. A repeating note of menthol calls for patience, though. (ST) Inner quote mark (10/2013)

Outer quote mark Not surprisingly this really hasn't changed very much from my original review last year (see herein) other than I have extended the initial drinking window slightly. I repeat the note here: There is a hint of mandarin orange to the otherwise more classic aromas of white peach, green apple, citrus and wet stone. The well-detailed and intensely stony medium weight plus flavors possess an excellent sense of underlying tension on the saline-infused, dry and well-balanced finish. I like the mid-palate concentration and while this is already delicious, this is sufficiently serious as to require another 4 to 6 years of cellar time. (AM) Inner quote mark (11/2015)

92 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2011 Corton-Charlemagne from Bonneau du Martray remains reticent and not fully expressive, although it opens up nicely over time. Subtle veins of minerality support white orchard fruit and flowers in a layered, subtle Charlemagne. (AG) Inner quote mark (12/2013)

Outer quote mark Bottled in spring 2013, the 2011 Corton Grand Cru has an airy bouquet that is quite deceptive. Give it modest aeration and it unveils a hidden fruit intensity - raspberry and strawberry leaf, a slightly sauvage element to the aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with a very zesty, inviting entry. There is a meatiness to the fruit, irony almost, with superb definition and focus toward the finish. This has real character. This is a very accomplished Corton Rouge and a worthy follow-up to the outstanding 2010. (NM) Inner quote mark (12/2013)
