2011 Quinta do Vesuvio Vintage Port

SKU #1141263 98 points Wine Spectator

An elegant style, full of well-spiced, juicy flavors of raspberry, boysenberry and blueberry that extend with lively acidity and well-integrated tannins. Unctuous and succulent on the finish, which oozes with molten chocolate. Best after 2025. (KM) (2/2014)

96 points Wine Enthusiast

Red and black berries bring out the richness of the year, masking the seriously tannic structure. The wine has great spice, richness and a dark, smoky core of powerful tannins. For long-term aging, but delicious now. *Cellar Selection* (RV) (10/2013)

95 points Decanter

A high score in 1998 and the same here. Opulent aromas of plums, cherries and lifted blossom. Rich and luxurious with dense, ripe, minty fruit with firm tannins to back it up. A wonderfully solid finish. Complete. (RM) (12/2017)

95 points James Suckling

Aromas of flowers and berries with hints of dried fruits. Full body, medium sweet with solid tannins and a powerful palate. This goes on for minutes. Extremely well-made. 1,250 cases produced of this foot-trodden wine. Better in 2022. (5/2013)

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Bright, deep ruby. Knockout perfume nose combines blackberry, blueberry, licorice and violet, conveying an impression of sweetness and energy. Savory and gripping on the palate, with a primary sweetness to the fresh black cherry and dark berry flavors. Wonderfully smooth already and very rich and long on the aftertaste. Will rely as much on its sound acidity as on its well-integrated tannins for longevity. (ST) (5/2014)

92-94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2011 Quinta do Vesuvio has a primal bouquet with heady scents of macerated dark cherries, boysenberry jam and a slight fug of alcohol that should be integrated by the time of bottling. The palate is very rounded with sweet ripe tannins, plenty of raisin-tinged black fruit, and delicate touches of cracked black pepper and shaved ginger on the cohesive finish. This is a superb Quinta do Vesuvio. (NM) 92-94+ (6/2013)

Treacle and firm on the nose -- so noble! Rich and sweet and flattering on the palate. Gosh this is gorgeous. It may open a little bit before some of the others but it's just classic. So beautifully made. 18.5/20 points. Drink 2022-2045. (JR) (5/2013)

- Although quite small, Portugal produces a great variety of wines ranging from light and fizzy Vinho Verde to hearty and tannic Port. Portugal is Europe's fourth-largest wine-producing region, and has been exporting its wine since the 14th century. The Douro Valley of Portugal is the original and current home for the world's finest Port. The valley spans from east of the city of Oporto all the way to the border of Spain and is the country's best known wine region. Lesser-appreciated DOCs like Bairrada and Dão area also emerging for their fine, rustic reds.

- Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare.
