2010 Dunn Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

SKU #1140361 94 points Vinous

Outer quote mark Exotic, aromatic and expressive, the 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley is incredibly beautiful today. Dark cherry, plum, spices, violets and lavender are some of the many notes that take shape in the glass. The 2010 is surprisingly accessible for a young wine from Dunn, but it has also only recently been bottled, so I will not be surprised if it shuts down a bit over the next few months. The finish is long, silky and exquisite. In 2010, the Napa Valley is mostly fruit from Dunn's Lake Vineyard, a cold, late-ripening site planted between 2000 and 2002 on a plateau at 1,800 feet, a stone's throw from the winery, so the Napa is essentially all Howell Mountain fruit. Dunn fans won't want to miss the 2010. It is stellar. (AG) 94+ Inner quote mark (11/2013)

Outer quote mark The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa exhibits classic notes of crème de cassis and forest floor in a rich, chocolaty, well-made, pure style. Dunn is famous for watering back the alcohol levels after picking very ripe, but this wine is beautifully balanced with sweet tannin as well as lots of blue and black fruits that handsomely reflect Napa’s strength with this varietal. Drink it over the next 10-15 years as the tannins are slightly more civilized and softer than some of Dunn’s ancient vintages. (RP) Inner quote mark (10/2014)

Outer quote mark Bright, deep red. Wild, highly aromatic nose combines raspberry, blackberry, coffee, leather and mocha. Broad, ripe and dry, with peppery acidity and a deep spicy character lifting the dried cherry, dark berry and pipe tobacco flavors. Savory and claret-like Cabernet with a very long finish featuring fine-grained tannins and subtle notes of leather, black cardamom, black tea and licorice. (ST) Inner quote mark (6/2014)

K&L Notes

The 2010 Napa Cabernet is already a fairly approachable wine, given that the majority of the fruit comes from the Howell Mountain appellation. It is loaded with black currant fruit, laced with aromas of graphite, spice, cedar and mineral hints. The tannins are integrated and quite soft for a wine from Dunn. That being said, this is still a serious Cabernet that could be one of the best wines from the 2010 vintage! (Clyde "Trey" Beffa III, K&L Domestic wine buyer)

Bordeaux lovers take note: This serious yet approachable Napa Cabernet will give many top-notch wines from Pauillac or Pessac-Leognan some major competition. This starts with aromas of scorched earth, smoke, cedar and toasty oak before the blackberry and black currant fruit flavors take over in the rich and velvety middle. There are fine, ripe tannins and pencil lead minerality on the lingering and mouth-coating finish which shows perfect tension between grip and elegance. This could be decanted tonight but will cellar very well.

For the 2010 Napa Valley vintage, the confluence of a long, cool growing season for most of the summer and a late, rather merciless heatwave contributed to many sensuous wines of harmonious brilliance, textural sophistication and great depth. The Dunn Napa Cabernet Sauvignon is an uncompromising, serious contender, capable of developing for perhaps two decades, but with the luxurious richness of the deep blackcurrant, brambly and mineral-laden fruit, beautifully finessed by suave, lavish tannins, you don't have to wait very long to enjoy it. Consider it a Dunn deal!

Dunn vineyards produces another winner! Lush, full and rich. Red fruits on the nose with touches of minerals and cedar spice. On the palate, dark boysenberry fruit with subdued spices and excellent tannic structure. I had it right after it was freshly opened and this release does not have as much tannin as in past vintages. This being said, it will still age magnificently, like every other Dunn release.

Another stunner has arrived from Dunn! Out of the glass are complex aromas of leather, blackberries, toasty cedar, and mint. Flavors of cassis, blueberries, black tea, and mocha persist at length, providing great depth. A long, long finish seals the deal and reinforces what many know already: Dunn Vineyards is amazing. Despite being from the newest vintage, it is approachable and drinkable now with decanting. This is a balanced, nuanced, and delectable Cab for the holidays.
