Malescasse sits high atop a crest of land in the Haut-Medoc commune of Lamarque, and its vineyards are blessed with excellent, top grade gravel soils that define so many great properties in Bordeaux. Time has patiently conspired to create a lovely bottle of wine, brimming with luxurious black fruits, violets, tobacco leaf and mellow, complementary tannins. No wonder it has been one of our most popular wines with those who cherish well-priced Bordeaux for the last year!

An historic property ideally situated on gravel soils close to the Gironde River just north of Margaux. The 2004 Chateau Malescasse, Haut-Medoc has continued to mature since I last reviewed it two years ago. Still youthful, yet with a more savory character emerging on the nose and palate. There is admirable weight here, and a rich texture that, combined with the ripe, sweet fruit makes a very favorable impression indeed. There is the barest hint of brett on the finish, a light seasoning that will no doubt please lovers of “classic” claret. Terrific value.

At 10 years old the 2004 vintage Bordeaux have finally turned a corner and are becoming the delicious values we always thought they would. This is lively, fresh and expressive with bright flavors of ripe cherries, baked rhubarb and red licorice crammed into the rich middle. On the finish there is earth, spice box and faint hints of leather. This is a delicious decade old bargain to drink tonight.

I must admit that property can sometimes be a little too "rustic" for my tastes...but this 2004 is showing beautifully right now. Very traditional, elegant, supple, creamy fruit texture, nice development, silky tannins and well-integrated acidity. A excellent value given the wine's age, and lovely secondary qualities. Clyde picked a sleeper here.

Why pay $50 for a California Cabernet that has been "engineered" to drink well young when you can spend less than half that for a Bordeaux that has the age it needs to drink now? I just bought a case of this 2004 Malescasse and will start enjoying it right now! This is medium to full bodied, dark cassis fruit driven, richer Cab based Bordeaux that is a perfect partner for your next steak dinner!
