2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Médoc

SKU #1139362 94 points James Suckling

Outer quote mark A wine with blueberry and mineral aromas follows through to a full body, with fine tannins and a juicy finish. Best for years from here. Needs at least three years of bottle age to soften. Could be better than 2009 in the long run. Inner quote mark (2/2013)

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The wine needs a good 7-10 years of cellaring and should keep for 30 more years, but this is the finest Cantemerle I have encountered in my professional career of tasting young vintages (dating back 34 years now). Stunningly deep ruby/purple, with a beautiful nose of spring flowers intermixed with perfumed raspberry and blueberry notes, it exhibits a sort of cool-climate character. Broad, rich and intense on the palate, the wine has plenty of tannins, but they are sweet and well-integrated. Everything is delicately entwined into this beautiful, medium to full-bodied, dense purple wine, which shows stunning character and a prodigious potential for development. This is definitely a major sleeper of the vintage and even better than I thought from barrel. With its 2010, this classified growth located in the southern end of the Medoc may well have made a modern-day version of their legendary 1949. (RP) 94+ Inner quote mark (2/2013)

93 points Vinous

Outer quote mark The 2010 Cantemerle is vigorous and open on the nose, a mixture of red and black fruit with cedar and humidor scents. I admire the focus and detail. The palate is rounded in texture on the entry. This is a plumper, richer, more fruit-driven 2010 with a lush finish on the context of the growing season. You could broach this now, although I would prefer to leave it another three or four years. This is another excellent wine and candidate for most over-performing cru this vintage. Tasted blind at Farr Vintners 10-Year On Bordeaux horizontal. (NM) Inner quote mark (4/2020)

92 points Decanter

Outer quote mark Plush dark fruit in aroma and flavour, with plenty of extract and a firm tannic base, yet smooth and slick in texture. Still a touch chewy; leave a while. Drinking Window 2019 - 2029 (panel tasting) Inner quote mark (10/2018)

92 points John Gilman

Outer quote mark Château Cantemerle has been on a tear since the turn of the century and is really making some of the most exciting wines on the entire Left Bank these days. The 2010, which weighs in at a most judicious 13.5 percent alcohol was raised in forty percent new oak in this vintage. The result is a stellar 2010, that jumps from the glass in a deep, pure and very classy mélange of cassis, sweet, dark berries, espresso, cigar ash, gravelly soil tones and a deft framing of cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and gloriously pure and soil-driven for the vintage, with a superb core of fruit, great focus and balance and a very long, suave and ripely tannic finish. Château Cantemerle has a very, very sure hand at the rudder these days and is currently fashioning the greatest wines in the history of this venerable estate. A very, very exciting 2010, Cantemerle will need to be cellared a solid decade before broaching. (Drink between 2021-2060) 92+ Inner quote mark (3/2011)

92 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark A great success for this southern Médoc chateau, this is fine, elegant and perfumed. It bursts with a black fruit flavor, balanced by smooth tannins and acidity. It's a wine for medium-term aging over the next six years. *Best Buy* (RV) Inner quote mark (2/2013)

91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Offers a sappy feel, with deliciously pure notes of kirsch and blackberry preserves. Lightly toasted spice and singed anise accents lead to the long, graphite-fueled finish. Should age gracefully. (JM) Inner quote mark (3/2013)

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Good full ruby-red. Musky aromas of black cherry, blueberry, espresso, menthol and licorice, lifted by a cool floral element. Densely packed and savory, displaying sappy energy to its intense dark berry flavors. With a serious structure and no easy sweetness today, this vibrant wine will need a good five to seven years in the cellar and should last well. This may eventually merit an even higher score. (ST) 90+ Inner quote mark (8/2013)

Jancis Robinson

Outer quote mark Tasted blind. Mid garnet. Lifted, slightly leafy nose. Cassis and pencils. Lively and fresh, with chalky but fine tannins. More energy than many 2010s. Juicy and fresh. 16.5/20 points. (JH) Inner quote mark (2/2020)

K&L Notes

The 2010 is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 4% Petit Verdot. The vineyard is situated on deep gravel deposits in the Macau and Ludon villages of the appellation and has 9,600 vines per hectare. A dense and rich yet elegant Cantemerle from a great vintage. 90 points Lisa Perotti-Brown in Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet colored, the 2010 Cantemerle gives up notes of cassis, baked plums and fragrant earth with hints of pencil shavings and bay leaves. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is chock-full of bright, juicy fruit with a lively backbone and a bit of chew to the finish." (3/2020)

The very first wine I bought for my cellar from this historic 2010 vintage. The 2010 Cantemerle, Haut-Medoc embodies everything that is great about the vintage - astonishing depth of color and flavor, big fruit, profound structure. One of the rare Haut-Medoc chateaus to be included in the classification of 1855 this cinquieme cru is one of Bordeaux's great values. Don't miss a chance to add some to your cellar.

Without a doubt the best Cantemerle since the legendary 1949. Packed with cassis fruit with perfect acid balance and plenty of latent tannin to insure twenty more years cellaring. But you can drink it now with 2 hours decanting. More approachable than most 2010 Bordeaux. I love it. PS-please also look at the 2015 that is selling on futures-right up there with the 2010.

52% Cabernet, 35% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Nice pure bright red fruit, good structure with big tannins and high acidity. This is a good wine for under $40 that is built to cellar.

For as young as this wine is, it is already showing its great potential. This wine is already displaying elegant floral aromas and blue fruit, with integrated juicy tannins. I look forward to laying down the 2010 Cantemerle for a minimum of 5 years, and enjoying it for many years following!

This was one of my favorite wines in our staff Bordeaux tasting in Hollywood, with black fruit, spice and coffee peeking through, with just the faintest hint of eucalyptus. The fruit, acid and tannins were all completely in balance. This is going to be a showstopper in a decade, and for the price it's a no-brainer.
