2011 Martinelli "Vellutini Ranch" Russian River Valley Zinfandel

SKU #1137976 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Bright purple. Aromas of cassis, cherry compote and mocha, accented by a floral topnote. Sappy and expansive, offering intense dark berry flavors sharpened by zesty acidity. Fine-grained tannins arrive late and add shape to the energetic, appealingly sweet finish. I find this wine drinkable now but have no doubt that it will age gracefully. Inner quote mark (6/2013)

91 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Plush, silky and ripe, with aromas of cherry, mineral and spice that lead to layered and jammy wild berry, caramel and herb flavors. A style many will love. Drink now through 2020. 351 cases made. Inner quote mark (6/2013)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark With 16.1% alcohol, the 2011 Zinfandel Vellutini Ranch was obviously picked ripe. There are 350 cases of this cuvee, which was made from the same clonal material from the Jackass and Jackass Hill vineyards. Aromas of ripe figs, black currants, incense, camphor and underbrush emerge from this full-bodied Zin. It possesses slightly more tannin than its siblings, and requires consumption over the next 3-4 years. The Martinellis, one of the most significant vineyard owners in Sonoma, have a history going back well over one hundred years of developing impressive terroirs from which they fashion top-flight wines. Inner quote mark (12/2013)

K&L Notes

Similarly steep slope, similar soil, and same vine selection as Martinelli's famous, and two-and-a-half times more expensive, Jackass Hill Zinfandel. Get a taste from this very special spot, nestled in the redwoods very near to the Russian River as it makes its final approach to the Pacific, then move on to the Jackass Hill when you're ready to splurge. From Martinelli Winery: "The Vellutini Ranch is bordered on the east by Jackass Hill and on the south by Jackass Vineyard, sharing the same Franciscan soil type. Lee and Carolyn Martinelli hired their teenaged grandson, Anthony Britton, Jr., to help plant the steep slope with Zinfandel in 1999. The two vineyards are comprised of eight small blocks. The Zinfandel is planted with bud wood from the Martinelli family's centurion grapevines Jackass Hill and Jackass Vineyard."
