Ragnaud Sabourin K&L Exclusive Reserve Speciale #20 Cognac (750ml)

SKU #1137468

The vineyards of Ragnaud-Sabourin stretch far over the hills in Grand Champage, 33 hectares of Ugni Blanc with a bit of Folle Blanche as far as the eye can see. This estate is known throughout France for having the goods, and we couldn't have been more impressed after visiting the property this past spring. Today the estate is run by Annie Sabourin, who is the daughter of the late Marcel Ragnaud, and she makes sure every drop lives up to the property's reputation. The collection of Ragnaud-Sabourin selections we tasted were spellbinding and easily one of the most polished portfolios we've ever come across. The Reserve Speciale No. 20 is a 20-year-old expression with supreme delicacy and elegance. The fruit is dainty, but never faint or flat, while the vanilla and caramel provide the backbone of the brandy's structure. It's simply delightful Cognac, but never overly rich or sumptuous. It's not decadent, yet it's memorable and haunting. It perfectly represents the quality for which Ragnaud-Sabourin is widely recognized.

The big bold character of the Ragnaud 20 is an interesting contrast to the much rounder 35 year. Here we're a few ticks up on the oak, but still with an elegance the pervades the entire Sabourin line up. The nose is chalked full of ripe exotic citrus, creamy vanilla cakes, plum jam, cinnamon, spice box, exotic wood. On the palate is weighty and wild. Powerful ginger and sweet citrus. Delicate rancio, but not quiet into the oloroso stuff. Very inviting, very delicious, pretty dry and spicy. Maybe a good one for the single malt guys to cross over on account of the balanced sweetness and wild complexity. I like this batch better than when we first tasted it 5 years ago. A real gem at this price, but not for the sweet toothed cognac lovers.

What a soft and elegant Cognac. There are layers of fruit and florality throughout the nose. The barrel spice provides structure, but always allows the other notes to sing through. Cherry and vanilla brush up against violet and peach. Orange flower briefly succumbs to hazelnut before bouncing back to the fore. There are some richer caramel notes on the palate, but the brandy never loses its light and playfulness. Impressive

Caramel, dark honey and supple toffee flavors mix amazingly well in this deliciously smooth bottle of 20 year old cognac. Ragnaud Sabourin is a very reputable brand and this cognac is bursting with flavor and quality. It's creamy, luscious and exudes vanilla and honey fragrances. Definitely deserves a spot on the shelf. Would make an excellent gift for whiskey lovers too~

Opening on a pretty fruit-filled nose, with ripe apples, white peach and hints of warm spices. The palate is smooth with an enjoyable weight and caramely vanillins on the finish mingling with hints of citrus zest and a lightly spicy liveliness. Delicious and worthy of a place on your shelf.

If you buy any Cognac this year, make it on of the Ragnaud-Sabourin's. My favorite producer in Cognac is back and they do not disappoint. The No 20 is so delicate and special with an incredibly fresh and fruity nose. It definitely exhibits the Ugni Blanc and Folle Blanche flavors as they are very careful to let them shine, not cover them up with excessive oak. Notes of whipped cream and Christmas spice round out the palate for the perfect finish. Top marks!

A delicate, soft and pretty noise. In the mouth the Ragnaud is soft and delicate with a mouth feel that is almost creamy. This Cognac is very easy to drink and enjoy and is elegance in a bottle.

I just tried this fantastic cognac this morning. Better than cornflakes! It has a lovely, delicate nose of cinnamon, orange peel and apricot. Vanilla, caramel and stone fruit on the palate. Very feminine and a great contrast to the much more common heavy, sweet caramel cognac styles. Sip it, sip it, sip it. Great stuff!

If you love great Cognac and don't need a famous name on the label, the Reserve Speciale 20 from Ragnaud Sabourin is one of the most compelling deals in the store. Worthy of the most special occasions, this has depth of fruit, lovely French vanilla and spice as well as an ease of drinking and balance usually only found at double the price.
