2011 Château de Montfaucon Côtes du Rhône

SKU #1137092 Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Subtle hints of granite and crisp red cherry on the nose gain power and concentration in this concentrated, stately red. A Grenache-dominant blend augmented by smaller proportions of Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise, it balances zesty cherry and berry flavors against an elegant, stony undertow. At peak now–2024. (ALCI) Inner quote mark (5/2021)

Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark A sanguine thread weaves from start to finish, surrounded by fleshy plum, blackberry and licorice notes. A floral hint adds charm on the finish. (JM) Inner quote mark (12/2013)

K&L Notes

Montfaucon crafts their Côtes du Rhône to express the intense fruit characteristics of the appellation, highlighted in 2011 by an extended summer lasting through September. A blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 20% Cinsault and 10% Carignan, the wine has been fermented and aged in concrete tanks for 18 months. Concrete fermentation and aging is a common method in France, but also now being adopted even for premium Rhone-styled wines in the New World. The aromatics are "full of intense red fruit raspberries, cherries and blackcurrant," according to the winery's notes, "with hints of peppery and floral notes of violettes. The mouthfeel is suave and round finishing with silky tannins."

If you're still searching for a very well-priced Côte du Rhône red that will embellish virtually any dish that isn't a fish, then this is it. A classic, unoaked blend of Rhone varieties: Grenache, Cinsault, Syrah and Carignane, reveling in bright red and black fruit aromas with a touch of warm spice and subtle violet aftertones, this elegant, smoothly-textured beauty brings everything to your table, delivering glass after glass of harmonious pleasure.

Wow! Chateau de Montfaucon has delivered once again on a delicious Rhone red at an exceptional value. To fans of the winery this probably comes as no surprise, however I am shouting from the rooftops that the 2011 release is my absolute favorite ever! Classic in its proportions (fruit, acidity, tannins and alcohol) while also modern in its winemaking (clean, fresh, vibrant fruit) this Cotes du Rhone is the absolute package and a serious over acheiver. A++
