2011 Château de Montfaucon Côtes du Rhône

Wine Enthusiast
Subtle hints of granite and crisp red cherry on the nose gain power and concentration in this concentrated, stately red. A Grenache-dominant blend augmented by smaller proportions of Syrah, Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise, it balances zesty cherry and berry flavors against an elegant, stony undertow. At peak now–2024. Wine Spectator
A sanguine thread weaves from start to finish, surrounded by fleshy plum, blackberry and licorice notes. A floral hint adds charm on the finish. (JM)

K&L Notes
Montfaucon crafts their Côtes du Rhône to express the intense fruit characteristics of the appellation, highlighted in 2011 by an extended summer lasting through September. A blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 20% Cinsault and 10% Carignan, the wine has been fermented and aged in concrete tanks for 18 months. Concrete fermentation and aging is a common method in France, but also now being adopted even for premium Rhone-styled wines in the New World. The aromatics are "full of intense red fruit raspberries, cherries and blackcurrant," according to the winery's notes, "with hints of peppery and floral notes of violettes. The mouthfeel is suave and round finishing with silky tannins."
