 This is nicely cloaked with charcoal and roasted apple wood, while the core of steeped fig, blackberry and black cherry paste notes sits in reserve. The well-defined finish is mostly grip for now, but should meld in the cellar. Best from 2014 through 2026. (JM)  (3/2013)

Complexity and value. That's how I would describe this wine. It is a classic St-Emilion, packed with its dark fruit and light incense notes. The palate is velvety and elegant, with its tannins that are never grippy. It shows some development on its alluring leather notes, but still with a good 10 years of drinking pleasure.

The new home of Nicolas Thienpont the famous winemaker of Larcis Ducasse, Pavie Macquin, Beausejour Duffau, etc. he has turned this small property around and the wines sing these days. This 2010 is one to cellar at least ten more years. 5% Cabernet Sauvignon gives it more backbone than most right bankers. Superb value.

This is full-bodied and tightly packed with ripe dark fruits and hints of tar and mineral. The tannins are sweet and polished and there is a roasted charcoal note on the glossy finish. Is this a Saint-Emilion that thinks its a Pauillac?

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.


- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country.
