K&L Notes

Baron Fuente is a négociant that owns almost 90 acres of vines and purchases another 90 acres "sur pied," meaning that they pick the grapes. This is an important distinction since many négociants buy "sur lattes," meaning in bottle! The Grand Millésimé is a blend of 45% Chardonnay, 40% Meunier and 15% Pinot Noir that spent more than seven years on the lees. (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

The complexity of this vintage Champagne it is not reflected in its incredible price, which is only possible because of our direct import program. That is an incredible opportunity to show off with a bottle of a boutique (and very hard to get) Champagne in a dinner party.

I can't believe that this wonderful Champagne is only $29.99. It tastes like one spent a lot more money for this high quality. It has nice bubbles and balanced juicy and dry fruit flavors that are enhanced by mineral undertones. This makes for one fantastic, complex Champagne.

The entire Baron Fuente line up is just spectacular but this bottling stands out not just because of the quality of the vintage but also for how fine and lacy it is compared to the other offerings. The sweetness and purity of fruit you expect from this property is there but also a more pronounced strike of minerality that lets the finish last just a bit longer. This is fantastic quality in vintage Champagne for $30.00.

What's not to like about the 2006 Baron Fuente Grand Millesime Brut Champagne? The warm vintage yielded big, bold wines that offer generous fruit and are perfectly ready to drink. Seven plus years on the lees added a rich, toasty complexity with notes of brioche and pain grillé. There is an intriguing spiciness (cinnamon?) that I attribute to the quality of the Pinot Meunier in the blend. Notes of candied lemon peel and baked apple round out the flavor profile. Did I mention the price? Direct import pricing and a favorable euro-dollar exchange rate mean you can take a bottle home for less than $30.

The 2006 Baron Fuente “Grand Millisime” Brut Champagne is the perfect vintage Champagne that I will be putting on my dining table this holiday season. So incredibly layered, the nose can only be described as elegant and sophisticated.  Distinct aromas of green apple, lemon curd and fresh toast are in a harmonious balance with ripened pomaceous fruit, minerality, toast and leesiness that can only be achieved through vintage and bottle age. Once you get over the ridiculously amazing price for a vintage Champagne, the 2006 Baron Fuente "Grand Millisime" Brut Champagne is a no-brainer.

I was not too familiar with vintage Champagne before starting with K&L and was always curious about the passion people had when discussing it. Having now tasted some I am on board, but it is tough to not go broke drinking it. Thankfully, Baron Fuente is here to help: it is almost funny that we can drink amazing vintage Champagne for this price. The toasty notes and dried fruit mid-palate make this an incredibly food friendly Champagne. The complexity of it was astounding and I loved the finish. This will definitely be gracing my Thanksgiving table and it also works beautifully to drop some spiced pear liqueur into for a Autumn Kir Royal.

Unbelievable! An amazing vintage Champagne, and a great vintage at that, for sub-$30! You've got to be joking, right? In fact we are not, that is the beauty of finding a hidden gem in this gorgeously stupendous Direct Import we've gotten our hands on! I love the purity of fruit and the focus here. Not too challenging for being just released, but still very cellar-worthy. I can't think of any other Champagne in the whole store that I could recommend at a better value for the holidays or any occasion--every day is a celebration in my book!

What I really seem to enjoy about these wines, is the amount of Pinot Meunier they PROUDLY use at Baron Fuente. I love the expression this grape variety adds to champagne. The 2006 vintage in Champagne, I am told, was a ripe and warm growing season...which makes sense with this wine as an example of the vintage. It is big and expressive, and it spent five or more years aging on the lees, which will give the wine so much more personality, life and structure. Enjoy this wine with food, just as we did on a very special night. These wines continue to over deliver at their price point.

If there has ever been a no-brainer in the world of Champagne, this is it! Vintage Champagne at this price should probably make you ask a least a question or two, but after one taste your only question will be: is there any more?!? Excellently rich on the nose, the champagne presents a subtle baked biscuit and green apple profile that is both satisfying and utterly refreshing. The combination of sensible, non-ostentatious marketing, and Gary Westby's hard work to bring Baron Fuente into the US directly for our K&L customers is responsible for the incredibly low price. The quality demands that we sell it for more, instead, we pass along one of the best bottles of vintage champagne you can actually afford to buy a case of.

This fantastic bargain of a small-estate champagne is just simply fantastic! From it's peach and apricot infused nose to its wonderful chalky acidity and depth, it is a real winner. The finish is long and slightly nutty with a nicely rich mid-palate character. Will also cellar very well!

The '06 Grand Millesime is a Sommelier’s dream. It drinks like a Champagne that's twice the price and offers endless possibilities for food pairing. It is impeccably balanced and complex with the perfect combination of toasted almond brioche richness, acacia honeyed-apricot aromatics, and refreshing acidity. It is fantastic with anything from sushi and tempura to my husband's favorite Chicken Vol-au-vent...or just enjoyed on its own (with visions of food for bottle #2)! If the rave reviews of practically every K&L Staff Member haven’t convinced you yet, would it help to know that this Champagne won a Gold Medal at the 2013 World Wine Competition? Buy one then buy a case - you won't be sorry.

Wow! Baron Fuente Champagne is the height of incredible wine for the money. I can't believe this delicious vintage bottle bears such a modest price tag! Located on the far western edge of the Champagne region, Baron Fuente is a smaller grower producer who is far more interested in the quality and appreciation of their wine than the price tag--all the better for us! This wine is very sublte, with a nice touch of richness from the Meunier, it yet retains a very balanced freshness, and delicate aromas from the pinot and chardonnay. Overall a very fine, delicate, well-balanced vintage champagne from a very good producer. What's not to love here?

The Baron-Fuente wines have never been better! They've always been an excellent value in the K&L direct-import champagne portfolio, but the quality now is on a new level. Take this example: a vintage champagne with focus, expression and complexity to spare, for less than $30? I plan to make a serious dent in our inventory of this wine!

As many Champagne prices have been substantially increasing this last year, I was beginning to believe that it would be very difficult for our Champagne buyer, Gary Westby, to be able to find in the near future really great Champagne at respectable prices. Welll...several months ago he discovered an amazingly great production, 2008 Louis Brison, which our entire wine staff went bonkers over, with an e-mail, with all our write-ups, going out to all of you, resulting in the sale of 3,600 bottles flying out our doors in only several hours (by the way, Gary has more of this Gem coming one last time, some 6,000 bottles - but it won’t be here for another two to three months). Sooo, just when I thought that this was an anomaly, he brings in this Gem, the 2006 Baron Fuente "Grand Millesime," another great vintage and a great Champagne at a ridiculously low price. Very, very fine bead in appearance with lush, toasty, nutty, doughy qualities on the nose, this incredible Champagne of Chardonnay (40%), Pinot Noir (30%), and Pinot Meunier (30%) shows an excellent complex, broad, viscous presentation across a well structured, excellent acid backbone palate impression. The finish is rich and deeply flavored, and long. Rizzo has demanded that I bring home at least a case of this Gem before it gets gobbled up by all our discerning customers. GREAT VALUE! ***** 12.0% ABV *****

Hello, a vintage Champagne for $30 bucks? This seems to good to be true, but it is. Capturing the ripe vintage of 2006, this wine oozes aromas of baked pastry and lemon. The palate is clean, and elegant with a silky mouthfeel. You don't have to be the rich and famous to drink like one. Get a bottle, you will be pleasantly surprised.

What a value in vintage Champagne! A lovely wine, very vinous and pure. Citrus, baked orchard fruit, chalk and richer notes of buttered toast. This wine shows the richness and texture of the warm 2006 vintage (warm is a relative term in Champagne remember!) but is perfectly balanced by Ignace Baron's very deft use of a lower dosage on this bottling of around 8g/l. A crowd pleasing wine and one that means we can all drink vintage Champagne on a Tuesday night wine budget! Nice work Gary Westby!

Such an elegant expression of Champagne, this wine shows the riper character of the 2006 vintage but with excellent balance. Pure, clean fruit with depth and length but fresh and clean. Not a toasty rich style just pure minerality for a superb vintage Champagne.....what? Wait I just saw the price? Holy Cow! What a steal!!!

Great complexity in a vintage Champagne for $30...come on! The '06 Baron Fuente "GM" has a bouquet of apple, pear, some plum-cherry red fruit character, pie crust, dried orange peel and a yeasty note. The palate is rich and concentrated with a creamy texture and good acid line that bring you to a layered, long finish. A great value in Champagne.

The '06 Baron Fuente "Grand Millésimé" is both refined and expressive. With 5+ years of lees time, it characterizes a genuinely toasty profile that's seldom found in the sub-$30 price category. These bubbles show stewed apples, Bosc pear and brioche on the palate, then taper into a lengthy, warm finish.

Such amazing value for vintage Champagne. This beautiful expression of a vintage that was beautifully sunny and warm shows off pretty notes of biscuit and perfectly ripened stone fruits on the nose. Followed a very clean and zesty palate, Citrus, orange cream and golden apple cascade over a fine and well integrated bead. Pretty amazing stuff for $30!

Tasting this wine in Epernay with Baron Fuente's Eric de Brissis was a great experience. I loved the wine for its poised creaminess, lovely nutty flavors and clean, long finish. This is a very elegant, subtle bottle of wine that will impress the most jaded of palates. In my notebook from that day, I wrote "tastes expensive"... Then he showed me the price. Deals like this don't come every day, and I would suggest that you join me in buying a case, or maybe two!
