Bright red-ruby. Distinctly Burgundian aromas of red berries, smoke, underbrush and game. Sappy and silky in the mouth, with highly complex flavors of redcurrant, black cherry, tobacco, leather and game. Quite fine and pinot-like, and already very perfumed in the mouth. Finishes subtle and very long. A lovely combination of power and finesse. This wine was racked just once. (ST) (1/2002)
With four great vintages of Chateauneuf du Pape, 1999 being the least impressive, readers should not miss out on any of the 1999s from Domaine du Caillou as I have seen them available at retail. No, they are not the 1998s, 2000s, or 2001s, but they are spectacular efforts that represent some of the finest wines of the vintage. Not bad! (RP) (2/2003)
