2010 Joseph Phelps "Freestone Vineyard" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir

SKU #1130961 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark The 2010 Pinot Noir Estate Freestone Vineyard is more fruit-driven than the Pastorale. Immediate and juicy, the 2010 jumps from the glass with layers of radiant red fruit. I would prefer to drink the 2010 while the fruit remains front and center. This supple, resonant Pinot is another gorgeous wine from Phelps. The 2010 is a blend of roughly equal parts Pastorale and Quarter Moon Vineyards. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2020. Once again, I came away deeply impressed with the wines I tasted from Joseph Phelps and their Freestone Vineyards range. These are without question some of the most polished wines being made in the Sonoma Coast today. (AG) Inner quote mark (4/2013)

Outer quote mark This shows the power and purity of the winery's coastal Pastorale and Quarter Moon vineyards, in this cool vintage that allowed for long hang time. Although some coastal Pinots were plagued by rot, this one was not, resulting in a wine with delicious raspberry and cherry notes, accented by new French oak. It's very fine, complex and enjoyable now. Inner quote mark (12/2012)

Outer quote mark If the Phelp's Pastorale bottling is somewhat less than forthcoming for the nonce, this one might be considered to be reluctant and a bit petulant in its refusal to be expressive, outgoing and inviting. Yet, there is brilliant balance here with all the red cherry fruit one could ask for in the wine's latter palate and incredibly long finish. We suspect it will never be a bold wine yet we would be happy to serve this now and over the next four or five years alongside seared tuna steaks or with the other meaty fishes while it finds greater openness. 90 points Allen Meadows - Burghound

Outer quote mark This is quite different from the 2009 version with its high-toned nose of raspberry, cherry and hints of cranberry and spice. There is a lovely sense of energy to the attractively detailed and refreshing middle weight flavors that possess reasonably good depth on the persistent and utterly delicious finish that is sufficiently structured to reward several years of bottle age. Inner quote mark (1/2013)

90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar

Outer quote mark Good medium red. Pungent aromas of raspberry, smoke and spices. Supple, sweet and rich, with plenty of early sex appeal to the red berry, spice and loam flavors. Real California sweetness of fruit leavened by saline soil tones. Tasty already. (ST) Inner quote mark (5/2012)

K&L Notes

Until this vintage, this western outpost of Napa Valley's Joseph Phelps was just called "Freestone Vineyards," but they decided that the Phelps name was more recognizable. Same biodynamically farmed vineyard, same Freestone-dedicated winemaking facility located on a curiously sunny bluff in the midst of foggy coastal Sonoma County. These wines have been outstanding from the start, and the 2010 falls right in line with this micro-region's complex potpourri, with its nuances of rose hips, Christmas spices and forest duff, finishing with firm, chewy cherry skin flavors.
