2010 La Conseillante, Pomerol

SKU #1128638 98 points Decanter

Outer quote mark This is just a beautiful wine, silky smooth and with a fresher balance than the 2009 thanks to a slightly higher acidity. It has the most stunning presence right from the start: a coiled, young, muscular wine of substance that has more in common with the 2005 than the 2009. Richly swirling black fruits fruits provide an amazing experience in a glass, one to savour slowly. No need to think about opening any time soon. (JA) Inner quote mark (11/2017)

Outer quote mark Beautiful nose with cocoa powder, exotic flowers, candied violets and loads of dark berries. Great aromatic complexity. Amazing texture on palate with a superb precision and silky tannins. So beautifully composed showing already great harmony. Difficult to wait! Inner quote mark (2/2013)

Outer quote mark The 2010 La Conseillante is a tour de force that will rival the 2005, 2000 and 1990 at maturity. Just loaded with notions of blackcurrants, damp earth, tobacco leaf, violets and toasty oak, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, building, ripe tannin, and a huge finish. Sexy and opulent, yet also classy and elegant, it’s a sensational Pomerol that has another three decades of life ahead of it. 97+ Inner quote mark (11/2017)

Outer quote mark The 2010 La Conseillante has always been a stunning Pomerol since I first tasted it early one morning out of barrel during en primeur and departed the château a little dazed. It continues to cruise at high altitude. As much as I love the 2009, it cannot hold a torch to the crystalline delineation of the 2010. It is laden with intense black fruit laced with struck flint, wilted rose petals and hints of truffle. The château had never produced aromatics at this level. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, a killer line of acidity, a sense of symmetry and focus that lends this La Conseillante brilliant vivacity and supreme length. This is where everything fell into place for the estate – a benchmark wine. Tasted at La Conseillante vertical at the property. (NM) Inner quote mark (5/2018)

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Outer quote mark A brilliant effort from this property, known for the sheer elegance and finesse of its wines, the 2010 La Conseillante offers back-to-back monumental efforts, particularly given the remarkable 2009. This estate has been on a hot streak of late. The 2010 is a slightly bigger, richer wine, but without losing its floral, elegant mulberry, black raspberry and sweet kirsch notes. Combine those with some licorice, subtle new oak and a hint of forest floor, and the result is a medium to full-bodied, rich, complex wine that has striking aromatics and perfect balance in the mouth. 96 points Wine Spectator

Outer quote mark Features substantial but very velvety structure running from start to finish, delivering a muscular feel for now. The hard edges are fully absorbed by the core of plum sauce, steeped blackberry and warm boysenberry reduction notes. The finish offers gorgeous tobacco and ganache accents lurking in the wings, along with flickers of anise and incense that should guide this version to increased elegance with age. 93-95 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark The tannins are huge, very dense, packing through the ripe fruit. At first it tastes like a mouthful of wood and fruit tannins, then the potential of the fruit becomes apparent. That gives a wine with a great, final acidity and finish. (RV) Inner quote mark (6/2011)

K&L Notes

The fifth generation of the Nicholas family, owners since 1871, is now managing La Conseillante. The 29+ acres of vineyards are planted to 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, with clay soils dominating the Merlot vineyards and gravelly soils dominating the Cabernet Franc. Neighboring the great estates of L'Evangile, Figeac and Cheval Blanc, La Conseillante could hardly hope for a better piece of land on which to farm. Though not classified, Robert Parker equates this estate to a second-growth in the Medoc in his book, Bordeaux. 96 points Lisa Perotti-Brown in Wine Advocate: "Deep garnet in color, the 2010 La Conseillante opens with notes of warm black plums, baked blackberries and blueberry preserves plus hints of dried rosemary, fragrant earth and cedar. Full-bodied, the palate is firm and chewy with a lively line cutting through the densely packed, savory layers, finishing a little warm and lifted." (3/2020)
