K&L Notes

Produced from old vine Monastrell grown in the chalky soils of Jumilla, this is one delicious, traditionally made number. A serious wine, it shows intense yet light on its feet darker fruit, with a hint of sweetly fragrant candied orange peel and cinnamon, both of which bring to mind a Spanish take on Bandol, yet the long ageing in old American oak suggests old school Rioja as well. Enjoy Pradeaux? Tondonia? You get the picture. This is far and away the most intriguing and serious bottle of old school, fully mature Spanish red wine that we've come across in quite some time.

Mourvèdre! Delicious and savory, dark fruited and often misunderstood, the grape is beautifully showcased in this bottle. I have come back to this wine about three times since it has been in stock, and am consistently impressed with the amount of wine packed into this bottle. The nose is a fragrant mix of dark fruit, sweet floral spice, and a newly developed nuttiness that has just come on in the last month. The palate is squarely medium bodied, a beautiful weight that is a product of soft, rich fruit and silky edges to the wine. There is earthiness here to compliment the richness of the fruit, and for me, this is a very proper representation of what Mourvèdre should taste like.

If you are a fan of old school, long aged Rioja, old school southern Rhone wines, old school, slightly more rustic 1990's era Spanish reds...then may I humbly suggest this 100% Monastrell (Mourvedre)? The Escudo de Plata is a delicious wine that offers an incredible balance of generous fruit, intensity of flavor without excessive heaviness, and nice developed complexity from long barrel and bottle ageing. This is true Monastrell, unmistakably Spanish and simply one of the better values in mature red wine we're likely to find this year. Don't miss out!
